FC Barcelona rose to the challenge against Villarreal on matchday 26 and delivered a statement victory that reaffirmed their authority at the top of La Liga. Marcelino’s side arrived as the third-placed team in the league but were comprehensively outplayed as the Catalans produced one of their most convincing performances in recent weeks.
The result carried added weight given the context. Barcelona had endured a turbulent spell after back-to-back defeats, first a heavy Copa del Rey loss to Atletico Madrid and then a damaging league setback against Girona.
That Girona defeat briefly knocked Barcelona off the top of the table as Real Madrid moved ahead, although the damage was quickly softened when Los Blancos dropped points against Osasuna.
With league momentum now restored, Barcelona’s focus shifts entirely to the Copa del Rey and the decisive second leg of the semi-final at the Spotify Camp Nou. The task could scarcely be more demanding. A four-goal deficit from the first leg against Atletico Madrid means only a historic night will be enough to book a place in the final.
Despite the scale of the challenge, as reported by Mundo Deportivo, the players made it clear that belief inside the dressing room remains strong ahead of the decisive clash at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Speaking through the club’s official social media channels after the final whistle, Lamine Yamal addressed the Barcelona fans while holding the match ball from his hat trick:
“See you on Tuesday at the Camp Nou — it could be a magical night.”
Dani Olmo also shared his confidence and highlighted the importance of the team’s performance against Villarreal in building momentum for the semi-final:
“We’re motivated, we know we can do it, and we’re expecting a great atmosphere at the Camp Nou. We’ve seen it happen in the past — comebacks are possible at the Camp Nou. The team played a great game against Villarreal; we wanted to arrive on Tuesday in good shape.”
Alejandro Balde echoed the same belief:
“It’s always possible. If they scored four goals in the first leg, we can do the same in the return. It will be difficult, but we’ll give everything.”
Cubarsi struck a similar note of realism and determination, stating:
“We’ll do our best — a comeback is possible, but it won’t be easy.”
With confidence flowing after a dominant league win and the Camp Nou set to host another knockout night under the lights, Barcelona head into Tuesday’s Copa del Rey showdown convinced that history can once again be written on home soil.
