FLW looks at what Swansea City must avoid before the the transfer window closing later this month

It's been a decent transfer window for Swansea City so far but Luke Williams will still want more as we approach the final few weeks of the window.

The Swans have brought in the likes of Lawrence Vigouroux, Eom Ji-Sung, Goncalo Franco, and Zan Vipotnik but there are still areas of Swansea's squad that look somewhat short of depth.

Swansea have only seen one senior player depart since the transfer window opened, which came when Nathan Wood joined Southampton, but other than that, Williams has been able to keep the players he would have wanted to keep.

However, we all know how quickly things can move in the transfer window and Williams won't be resting on his laurels until the window slams shut at the end of this month, as there's always a possibility that players could leave.

With that in mind, here are the two transfer scenarios that Swansea City must avoid this summer.

Selling Matt Grimes

Matt Grimes is Swansea's star player and he has been a mainstay in the starting XI since their relegation to the Championship in 2018.

The central midfielder played every minute of every league game for Swansea last season and has missed just four of their 230 Championship games since they were relegated six years ago.

This shows just how important he is to the club and losing their captain at this stage of the transfer window would be a massive blow for Swansea.

Grimes was linked with Sheffield United earlier in the window, although those links seem to have gone quiet recently, but until the transfer window closes there is always a chance that a club could come in with an offer that the 29-year-old can't refuse.

January 2025 will mark a decade since Grimes left Exeter City for Swansea and the player does seem happy and settled with life in South Wales, which should give supporters confidence that he'll remain at the club.

However, there are plenty of clubs in the Championship who would love a player of Grimes' quality at their disposal and Swansea will be hoping there's no more interest in their star man.

Not signing a winger

Swansea need to sign at least one winger this summer and not doing so would be a huge failure.

Williams has already recruited Eom Ji-Sung from Gwanju in South Korea, but more is needed, and the BBC reported previously that the Swans were looking to sign at least one winger after Eom had joined the club.

Swansea currently have Ronald, Eom and Josh Ginnelly as their wing options, but the latter has been out injured since September 2023, and it's unknown when he'll return, so they currently just have two wingers at their disposal.

It's important to add at least one more to the squad as an option from the bench or as rotation cover, and the club currently have 23-year-old Ruben Providence on trial from Austrian side TSV Hartberg.

Providence performed well in Swansea's 3-0 win over Rio Ave and looks like someone who'd make a good signing with Swansea and Oxford United said to be interested in signing him.

Even if Providence does sign, Swansea could probably do with one more depending on Ginnelly's expected return date, so they still have some work to do before the window closes later this month.
