Holders Newcastle United lost 2-0 to Manchester City in the League Cup semi-final first leg at St James’ Park on Tuesday.
Man City dominated possession in the first half but were unable to create any clear-cut chances to trouble Nick Pope.
Newcastle’s only real opening before the break came from an Anthony Gordon cross, which Joelinton spurned.
The second half was more lively, with both sides pushing to take control of the tie ahead of the second leg.
James Trafford made a brilliant save to keep out Yoanne Wissa’s looping header, before Bruno Guimaraes struck the woodwork.
City’s new signing, Antoine Semenyo, scored the game’s first goal with a tap-in at the far post, netting his second goal in as many games for the club.
The Ghanaian is now the first player to score in his first two appearances for Man City across all competitions since Emmanuel Adebayor in 2009.
Newcastle looked to respond straight away as Guimaraes forced Trafford to make a low diving save.
Semenyo thought he had doubled City’s advantage when he perfectly flicked the ball into the net from a corner, but his effort was ruled offside after a lengthy VAR check.
Rayan Cherki made it 2-0 in stoppage time, applying the finish after a brilliant team move. City are in control of the tie ahead of the second leg.
