There were five goals in a frenzied first 45 minutes at the Etihad, with Enzo Fernández opening the scoring with a clever free-kick from a tight angle.

Brian Brobbey equalised, before Rayan Cherki slotted us back ahead, only for Brobbey to level again shortly after.

Semenyo slammed in two wonderful goals either side of half-time to make it 4-2 before Brobbey completed his hat-trick for the visitors.

Erling Haaland had the final say, sliding in our fifth and his first against the Black Cats, meaning he’s now scored against every top-flight opponent he has faced during his time at City.

Despite the end-to-end nature of the game, Semenyo was just pleased to come away with the points to maintain our 100% winning start to the new campaign.

“Yeah if you’re winning at the end, you definitely enjoy it, if you lose, not so much,” he began in his interview after the game.

“We held on together as a team and we got the three points. It’s definitely an enjoyable watch. We’re just happy we got the three points at the end of the day.

“It’s been good so far. We don’t want to get too complacent. International break now so everyone will recharge and go to their games. We will come back from the international break and go again.

“It’s been amazing. He [Enzo Maresca] has come in and everyone is adjusting and we’re building a nice culture. We’re hoping we can collect as many points as we can.”

The winger also reserved some special praise for the Black Cats, who showed plenty of attacking endeavour.

“It was a tough battle today. We knew it would be hard,” he continued. “They’re a very good team and they made it difficult for us in so many periods of the game.

“They’ve made it tough against every team they’ve played so far. We knew it would be a tough one.

“We’re just happy with the three points.”
