Antoine Semenyo has enjoyed a dream start at Manchester City, being named the Premier League’s Player of the Month for February. The Ghanaian forward impressed immediately after his January move from AFC Bournemouth, hitting three goals and registering an assist in just five league outings.
Semenyo found the net against Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, and Leeds United, quickly proving himself a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s side. His performances have highlighted his adaptability, as he has been deployed across the forward line, on both wings, and even in midfield, demonstrating maturity beyond his years.
This marks the first time Semenyo has received the monthly award, and he is the first City player outside of Erling Haaland to do so since Raheem Sterling in December 2021. Haaland, of course, has claimed the accolade four times already this season, most recently in September.
The accolade also places Semenyo among an elite group of Ghanaian internationals. Only Tony Yeboah, who won it twice with Leeds in 1995, and Andre Ayew, who took the prize with Swansea in 2015, have previously earned the distinction.
Semenyo beat a competitive shortlist to take the award, which included Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres, City team-mate Nico O’Reilly, Brentford’s Dango Ouattara, Manchester United’s Benjamin Sesko, and Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk.
For a player in his first full month at a new club, Semenyo’s immediate impact could be a sign of many more accolades to come.
