Senne Lammens will have every right to be furious with Ayden Heaven after a defensive lapse in the first half against Hull City.

The newly promoted Premier League side stole their way into the lead at the MKM Stadium after Semi Ajayi netted following a challenging corner situation.

At 19 years of age, it’s worth emphasising that – while there are high expectations with regard to the teenager’s potential at Old Trafford – the mistakes of his development will evidently be happening on United’s watch.

And that’s been demonstrated right from the off in Manchester United’s 2026/27 Premier League opener against the Tigers.

In footage shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @GoalsXtra (relaying video from CytaVision Sports), goalkeeper Lammens positions himself to handle a potential header threat at the near post.

However, the loose ball ends up travelling to Oli McBurnie at the far post, who got around his man before letting fire and seeing his effort parried into the post by United’s Belgian No.1.

From that point on, the shotstopper was left utterly exposed in goal, leaving Ajayi free to pick up the rebound and fire into a practically empty net.

Man Utd are already familiar with set-piece threat in the Premier League

As Simon Stone reported for the BBC: “Ayden Heaven has done well in pre-season but his inexperience showed then. He was totally outmuscled by McBurnie, who was unfortunate not to score himself.”

While United can account for inexperience, especially given that they are planning for the long term with Ayden Heaven, it feels especially frustrating to concede in such a manner, given that Michael Carrick’s men are already well-acquainted with the current evolution of the Premier League.

Individual inexperience is one thing, but everyone is more than aware of the fact that you can’t afford to switch off in set-piece situations, given the extra emphasis that has been put on them in recent times as a tactical weapon.

Fair play to Hull City for utilising it on their return to Premier League football. But United really should know better.

Perhaps an indication that the Red Devils should be more careful in managing Heaven’s development and his minutes in the backline
