‘Sensational’ – Former Leeds United Star Hailed For Superb Debut | OneFootball

Former Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell has been lauded for a ‘sensational performance’ against Paris Saint-Germain on his Rennes debut.

The 24-year-old came through the Whites’ academy but never managed to establish himself as a regular first-team presence under Daniel Farke, prompting him to embark on a new chapter with Toulouse two years ago.

Cresswell subsequently grew into an established figure across two seasons with Toulouse, before another move surfaced this summer as Rennes and Crystal Palace went head-to-head for his signature.

Rennes ultimately won the race for his services, securing the defender on an initial loan deal that will become permanent next year.

Leeds will receive 15 per cent of the fee, having inserted a sell-on clause covering any future deal before Cresswell departed Elland Road, when the move does transform into a permanent one.

The centre-back made his debut in Rennes colours against PSG in the opening Ligue 1 fixture on Sunday, helping his new side secure a point in a 2-2 draw.

Journalist Andres Onrubia Ramos hailed Cresswell’s display against PSG, highlighting the defender’s performance as another reminder of the level he reached with Toulouse last season.

He also singled out Cresswell’s old-school defensive style, his bravery, physicality and willingness to put himself on the line, particularly inside his own box.

Ramos wrote on X: “Sensational performance by Charlie Cresswell against PSG.

“He was already one of the best centre-backs in Ligue 1 with Toulouse last season.

“An old-school defender who puts his head in where others won’t put their foot and is a beast in his own box.

“24 years old.”

Cresswell featured 14 times during his Leeds career, and if he can sustain a high level with Rennes, the prospect of an eventual return to England could become an intriguing one in the years ahead.

Meanwhile, Farke’s side had bolstered their central-defensive ranks this summer with the arrivals of Tarik Muharemovic and Nico Elvedi.

Further forward, the Whites have been pursuing Mykhailo Mudryk, although Chelsea have closed the door on that move despite the winger’s desire to make the switch to Yorkshire.

It remains to be seen if Farke has cause to regret letting Cresswell go as the season develops.
