Sergio Busquets, 38, has returned to Barcelona to begin his coaching career, assisting Barça Atlètic while he completes his qualifications. The club announced the move on Monday.
He bowed out after lifting the 2025 MLS Cup with Inter Miami, a 3-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps on 6 December, alongside Jordi Alba, helping former team-mates Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez.
The quartet flourished at Barcelona between 2012 and 2020, collecting 13 major trophies, including five La Liga titles and the 2015 Champions League as part of a treble. Suárez joined in 2013 and was the first to leave seven seasons later.
Long viewed as a future coach, Busquets became the archetype holding midfielder, relying on intelligence and composure rather than flash. His nicknames, El Pulpo and El Cerebro, reflect his positioning and game control. He made 880 senior appearances, 675 for Barcelona and 106 for Inter Miami, scoring 21 goals with 64 assists.
Born in Sabadell, around 12 miles north of Barcelona, he is rooted in Catalonia, and it is hard to imagine him leaving the Blaugrana. Even so, some Inter Miami supporters have floated him as a future manager, and the Messi project has shown never to rule anything out.
