Sérgio Conceição says Luís Filipe Vieira approached him about managing Benfica, though it amounted only to an informal conversation.

Asked on Monday whether he would accept a role at the Estádio da Luz, the former Porto coach said Vieira, a candidate in the club’s last election, had shown interest in appointing him if he returned as president. According to Glorioso 1904, any move was seen as unlikely given a deal with Marco Silva and unease among Benfica members.

Conceição said he would not deny there was interest from Vieira, but underlined that his close ties to Porto make the prospect complicated.

He added that, while he will not say never because he is a football professional, at present he finds it difficult to envisage working for another Portuguese club apart from Porto.

As a player, Conceição was a Portugal team-mate of Rui Costa, featuring together at Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup.
