Sergio Ramos’s proposed takeover of Sevilla is not expected to be completed before the end of the season, with the club’s relegation fight a key factor.

Diario AS reports that talks between Ramos’s consortium and the Andalusian club have yielded an agreement in principle. Due diligence, backed by Five Eleven Capital, is under way and many involved do not anticipate completion until after the campaign.

The timeline is influenced by Sevilla’s La Liga position. The team sit 15th, only two points above the relegation zone. Signing Ramos was considered, then ruled out.

Ramos and his partners have agreed a €450m deal for 65% of the shares. Relegation could slash the club’s valuation, possibly by half, which might necessitate fresh talks to adjust the price and could even see the deal collapse if either side refuses to move.

Supporters will be desperate for the club to pull clear after a difficult few years. Ramos will have ambitions to lift his boyhood side back towards the top end of La Liga, but that starts with avoiding relegation this season.
