Serie A 2026/27: Inter Milan make a strong start to their title defence | OneFootball

The start of the 2026/27 Serie A season has generated plenty of talking points, particularly for the clubs with title aspirations.

Six teams have an unblemished record after two games and four of them are teams who are expected to be battling to win the Scudetto this term.

Without further ado, read on as we look at how the Serie A title race is taking shape, starting with defending champions Inter Milan.

Inter make a flying start

After recording an impressive 4-1 home victory over Monza in their opening game, Inter were made to work a little harder in their second outing at Cagliari.

Hakan Calhanoglu’s long-range strike settled the game, but Cristian Chivu’s side needed two decisive saves from Josep Martinez to seal the win.

Calhanoglu is now the only midfielder to have scored more than once in each of the last 14 seasons across Europe’s top five leagues, highlighting his importance to the team.

However, Martinez arguably stole the show, making a pair of excellent stops in the second half to keep the home side at bay.

Yann Bisseck also stepped up when it mattered, heading a goal-bound effort over the bar as Cagliari desperately fought to equalise.

Inter’s ability to sig deep when they are under pressure is an attribute which should serve them extremely well as the season progresses.

Roma run riot

A pair of hugely impressive 4-0 victories over Fiorentina and Lecce in their first two fixtures have fired Roma to the top of the Serie A standings.

Donyell Malen has been a standout performer, scoring five goals in two games. He has now bagged 19 goals in 20 league appearances since joining the club from Aston Villa.

Having guided Roma to third place in Serie A last season, manager Gian Piero Gasperini is eager to knock Inter off their perch this time around.

Gasperini’s team are entertaining to watch when they are in full flow, but it is too early to determine whether they are genuine title contenders.

The upcoming home game against Atalanta will provide a useful indicator of their title hopes. They are also scheduled to host Inter Milan this month.

If Roma can reach the international break with their unbeaten record intact, it would be impossible to dismiss their chances of winning the Scudetto.

Amorim makes a solid start with Milan

Former Manchester United Ruben Amorim has made a solid start to life in Serie A by guiding AC Milan to victories over Torino and Venezia.

However, it would be fair to categorise Milan as ‘a work in progress’ and it will be intriguing to see how they fare when they face one of the top teams.

Striker Goncalo Ramos got off the mark for the season against Venezia, but he will need to be more clinical if Milan are to mount a sustained title challenge.

His wastefulness in front of goal kept Venezia in the game, and Amorim will be concerned by how often they breached Milan’s defence.

Visits to Juventus and Lazio in their next two games will demonstrate whether Milan have what it takes to stay in the title race this season.

Intriguingly, Christian Pulisic and Diego Moreira have yet to feature this term, so the level of performances could increase when they are integrated into the team.

Juventus could be dangerous

Juventus have been steady rather than spectacular in their first two games, defeating Frosinone and Parma without conceding a goal.

Luciano ​Spalletti’s side wasted plenty of decent opportunities against Parma, but eventually got the job done courtesy of Teun Koopmeiners late effort.

After buying extremely well during the summer transfer window, Juventus look well-placed to mount a sustained title challenge this season.

Atalanta and Lazio are the only other Serie A teams with a 100 percent record after two games, but neither appeal as potential Scudetto winners.

La Dea were extremely fortunate to beat Bologna in their second outing, while Lazio’s lack of firepower is still a major issue.

Napoli suffered a defeat in their second outing against Como, but should be capable of forcing their way into contention over the coming weeks.

Inter were worthy champions last season and they will be a tough nut to crack this time around.

Roma could keep themselves in contention under Gasperini, but Milan may be the biggest threat to the defending champions this term.
