Série A and B clubs approve phased cut to foreign player match limit from 2027 | OneFootball

Clubs from Brazil’s Série A and Série B have approved a phased reduction to the number of foreign players allowed per match, following a meeting with the CBF on Monday 21, according to Nosso Palestra.

The cap will drop year by year, from eight in 2027 to seven in 2028, six in 2029 and five in 2030.

The limit applies to those named for each game, not the total under contract. Clubs may retain more foreign players in their squads, provided they respect the cap when submitting match lists.

The change will directly affect squads with a strong foreign core. At Palmeiras, foreign players include Gustavo Gómez, Piquerez, Jhon Arias, Emiliano Martínez, Flaco López and Ramón Sosa, with others potentially involved depending on squad composition.

Foreign players’ influence has grown. A study published on Monday found they scored 105 goals in the sample analysed since the end of the World Cup, 28.2% of the total, with Palmeiras’ foreigners contributing 46% in that period.

The gradual rollout is intended to give clubs time to adjust sporting plans and contracts. Clubs with many foreign players should manage availability per match, especially in congested periods or during international call-ups, and this should influence future signings and renewals.
