Roma Target Zirkzee For January Boost
AS Roma are moving assertively into the January market and Joshua Zirkzee has quickly become their leading option, according to Fichajes. The Dutch forward, currently struggling for involvement at Manchester United, is weighing up a return to a league where he previously flourished. With only five appearances this season, all from the bench, the situation is finely poised for movement once the winter window opens.
Roma are pushing for consistency in the final third and recent issues in front of goal have sharpened focus on the recruitment strategy. Fichajes highlight that Gian Piero Gasperini has built strong tactical identity and ambition, but the side require greater reliability inside the penalty area. As the report puts it, “Roma continues to compete at the top of Serie A, but their main problem is a lack of effectiveness in the opposition’s penalty area.”
Strikers Artem Dovbyk and Hank Ferguson have struggled to impose themselves and the sporting department has aligned firmly on the need for a technical forward who links play and finishes chances. Zirkzee fits that requirement. His strong reputation from his Bologna spell makes him a logical candidate and one director quoted in discussions described him as “a profile with the right blend of intelligence and mobility for our structure.”
The forward’s Old Trafford situation is becoming unsustainable. He arrived with expectation but has been unable to secure a starting role. Fichajes underline that “in the five matches he has played, none as a starter, he has barely had a chance to showcase his quality.”
The player is open to a January departure and Roma are prepared to propose a loan with an option to buy. This provides flexibility while preserving financial control. Other European clubs have made enquiries, but the forward’s preference remains Serie A, a competition where he previously delivered with confidence and rhythm.
A return to Italy would offer Zirkzee the regular minutes essential for his development. Roma would acquire a forward familiar with the league and capable of linking effectively with Paulo Dybala, Soule amongst others. One club analyst privately noted that Zirkzee “can transform our attacking patterns if he finds sharpness quickly.”

There are risks, particularly around match fitness and adapting to Gasperini’s demands, yet the upside is considerable. This proposed move reflects Roma’s intent to stay in the title picture and sharpen their attacking edge.
From a Manchester United perspective, the report paints a picture that many supporters will recognise. Zirkzee arrived with buzz and promise but never truly received a run of games to establish rhythm. For fans, it raises the ongoing frustration around squad planning, especially when a technically gifted forward is signed, used sparingly, then linked with departure a season later.
United fans will ask whether the club maximised his qualities or simply failed to integrate him. Given the current inconsistency in attacking performance, some supporters may feel he deserved an extended opportunity. Yet others will argue that if the coaching staff believed he was not ready to influence Premier League fixtures on a weekly basis, a move that preserves his long term value makes sense.
What stands out is Roma’s conviction. Their belief in his Serie A suitability is strong and that alone should prompt internal reflection at Old Trafford. If he joins Roma and delivers immediately, the scrutiny will intensify. If he struggles again, United will feel vindicated. For now, supporters remain curious and slightly uneasy at the thought of another promising attacker leaving before being fully assessed.
