Roma moved six points clear at the top of the standings on Serie A match-day 17. The leaders came from behind to beat local rivals Lazio and take advantage of Inter’s draw against Napoli.

Inter couldn’t stay on top of things in their clash and had to settle for a 2-2 draw, failing to capitalise on their previous 3-0 win over Sassuolo the last time out.

Here’s how the latest lot of results in Italy’s top flight unfolded.

Fløe inspires Napoli comeback

Inter failed to defend a two-goal lead in their home meeting with Napoli. After playing out a goalless first half, the hosts took the lead in the 54th minute through forward Haley Bugeja. The Malta international headed in from Ivana Andrés’s inviting cross, shortly before Tessa Wullaert doubled the lead with her 12th Serie A goal of the season.

Napoli appeared to be down and out until Cecilie Fløe spearheaded a late fightback. With just over 10 minutes left to play of regular time, the Norway international latched onto a loose ball in the box and drove a low shot beyond Cecilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir. Fløe then played a key role in Napoli’s 86th-minute equaliser, embarking on a purposeful run from deep before playing the ball across for Hanna Barker to head in. As a result of the draw, Napoli remain three points adrift of third-placed Juventus, while Inter now need a remarkable turn of events in the final five games if they are to win the title.

Roma stage late turnaround in derby clash

Roma closed in on the Serie A title with a late turnaround against arch-rivals Lazio. The visitors scored the only goal of the first period, with Clarisse Le Bihan knocking down a deep corner for Nikola Karczewska to knock home. Lazio held on to their narrow lead until a goalkeeping error enabled Manuela Giugliano to level the scoreline. The Italy international saw her fierce shot slip through the grasp of Francesca Durante. Just moments later, Frederikke Thøgersen conjured up a special strike to clinch all three points and condemn Lazio to their first league defeat since January 18.

Ternana, Sassuolo claim a point apiece

Ternana and Sassuolo shared the spoils in a clash between two sides fighting to preserve their Serie A status. Kassandro Missipo put Sassuolo in front in the 14th minute, steering the ball home from Hélène Fercocq’s dangerous delivery from the left flank. The visitors led for just over 20 minutes until Valeria Pirone towered high in the box to power her header past Noemi Benz. Pirona’s seventh league goal of the season proved to be the final goal of the contest. The draw keeps Ternana in ninth spot and level on 13 points with 10th-placed Sassuolo, with both teams boasting a four-point buffer to the relegation spot.

Goals dry up on Serie A match-day 17

Unfortunately, there were three cagey contests that produced goalless draws at the weekend. Reigning champions Juventus were involved in one of those games as they played out a stalemate against basement side Genoa. Juventus have now gone four Serie A matches without a win and are in a real battle to secure a top-three finish. The team from Turin still occupy third place, but there are just four points seperating them from AC Milan in eighth position, highlighting the tense nature of the UWCL qualification battle. As for Genoa, they remain three points adrift from safety with five games left to play.

AC Milan and Como both missed the chance to close the gap to Juventus. Kayleigh van Dooren rolled the ball into the net in the early stages, but the AC Milan forward knew that it would be swiftly ruled out for offside. The hosts could have lost it late on when Miriam Picchi sent a rising effort towards goal. But fortunately for Milan, Laura Giuliani was in the right place to push the ball onto the crossbar. As a result of the draw, Como and Milan remain level on points and four points adrift of the top three.

Fiorentina and Parma also had to settle for a goalless draw on match-day 17. The two sides both created chances throughout the contest, with perhaps the best one falling to Fiorentina’s Michela Catena in stoppage time. Parma defender Carlotta Masu stood her ground to divert Catena’s goalbound shot over the crossbar. The result keeps Parma three points above the relegation spot and Fiorentina in sixth position.

Did you know?

Como have recorded four consecutive clean sheets in Serie A, including goalless draws in their last two outings against Ternana and Milan.

Best goal of Serie A match-day 17

Thogersen produced the strike of the weekend, not just because it proved to be a derby winner. The Roma full-back picked up the ball on the right flank and cleverly worked the space to drill a lofted strike out of Durante’s reach and into the top corner.
