Milan finally got their first win of the Serie A season on Saturday evening, in emphatic fashion too, as first-half goals from Theo Hernandez, Youssouf Fofana, Christian Pulisic and Tammy Abraham provided Paulo Fonseca with a 4-0 victory over Venezia.
Check out the player ratings from the entertaining 4-0 thrashing in San Siro.
Milan: Maignan 6; Emerson 5, Pavlovic 6, Gabbia 6.5, Theo Hernandez 7.5; Fofana 7, Loftus-Cheek 7; Pulisic 7.5, Reijnders 7, Leao 7.5; Abraham 7.
Best Milan player: Pulisic 7.5 – There were plenty of choices for Milan’s player of the match, Theo Hernandez in particular had a great all-round display. But Pulisic put in a leader’s performance in the attacking line and looked bright whenever he got near the ball. He dispatched his first-half penalty with no issues at all, and was gracious in letting his friend Tammy Abraham get off the mark by giving him the second a few minutes later. The performance becomes even more impressive when you consider he had to travel further than any other Rossoneri player on his way back from the international break.
Coach: Paulo Fonseca 8 – That was the best possible response. Honestly, the game was done by the half hour mark – despite their shaky start in the league, Milan were never going to let a four-goal lead slip at home in San Siro. Whatever Fonseca said to his players before kick-off the players were certainly fired up for it right from the off. Fonseca made decent tactical choices as well, swapping Tijjani Reijnders and Ruben Loftus-Cheek around worked well, and he was clearly right to reinstate Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao, who combined for the opener with just over a minute on the clock. It is only one game, but that felt like the proper start to Milan’s season.
Venezia: Joronen 4; Idzes, Svoboda, Schingtienne; Candela, Duncan, Nicolussi Caviglia, Zampano 6.5; Oristanio, Busio; Pohjanpalo 5.
Best Venezia player: Zampano 6.5 – Not an enormous amount of competition for Zampano for Venezia’s player of the match, truth be told. Individually, he was not bad at all, despite the scoreline, and was unfortunate to have had his consolation goal ruled out due to Hans Nicolussi Caviglia’s foul on Loftus-Cheek in the build-up.
Coach: Eusebio Di Francesco 4.5 – Perhaps showed Milan a little bit too much respect in the first-half. That said, Venezia were a mess in and around their own area early on and a motivated Milan were always going to pounce on those chances. Venezia were vastly improved in the second half, but it was too little too late by that stage, as they were already four goals down by the half-hour mark. Results need to start picking up soon, as Venezia currently find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table with one point from four matches.
