Decorated veteran Raphael Varane is yet to make a concrete decision on the next steps of his career after departing Manchester United last month.

Indeed, the Frenchman bid farewell to the Old Trafford faithful after three seasons as a Red, throughout which he played an integral role at the heart of the backline every time he stepped on the pitch.

United had opted against activating the one-year extension clause embedded into his contract, and, despite holding talks over the prospect of a new deal, they failed to materialise when all was said and done.

It’s thought that the primary factor in Varane being moved on was his eye-watering wages; he was the club’s second-highest earner on a reported £340,000 per week, yet his frequent injury woes meant that it was difficult to justify such a strain on the books – as well as the fact that he wasn’t getting any younger.

Nonetheless, the 31-year-old is now enjoying a well-deserved rest with his family before deciding on his next challenge. He retired from international duty in 2023, so will be cheering on his native France in the Euros from the sofa this year.

Varane could take his talents to Serie A

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Varane is a ‘dream target’ for newly-promoted Serie A outfit Como. Assistant manager Cesc Fabregas is targeting the World Cup winner and will try and put the wheels in motion for a potential deal.

However, Varane is garnering interest from ‘several clubs’ across Europe, therefore having his pick of potential suitors. It remains to be seen if the Italian side would come out on top.
