Stadio Artemio Franchi forms the backdrop for a high-stakes Serie A showdown between relegation-battling Fiorentina and table-topping Inter. Both teams desperately need three points here, albeit for different reasons.

Despite high pre-season expectations, Fiorentina have found themselves stuck in Serie A’s lower reaches, spending the entire campaign grappling for survival. After spending most of the season in the bottom three, Paolo Vanoli’s side finally clawed their way out on Monday, hammering direct rivals Cremonese 4-1 on the road.

However, the two-time Serie A champions are not out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination, with 18th-placed Lecce breathing down their necks. Indeed, Fiorentina’s fragile one-point lead over Eusebio Di Francesco’s side puts them in a near must-win situation against the pacesetters.

Despite leading the way since November, Inter’s 21st Scudetto is not a foregone conclusion yet, as runners-up Milan clinched a dramatic 3-2 home win over Torino yesterday to whittle down the gap to five points. Furthermore, Cristian Chivu’s men have suffered an alarming downturn since losing standout performer Lautaro Martinez to injury last month.

Inter have only won once in five matches since El Toro sustained a calf injury at Bodo/Glimt (D2, L2) and are winless in their last three outings, including a controversial 1-1 home draw against Atalanta a week ago. With the international break around the corner, the Nerazzurri seek a much-needed victory to restore a feel-good factor at San Siro.

Match Preview

Fiorentina

Eager to stave off relegation fears, Fiorentina will be out to maintain their momentum after beating Rakow on Thursday to qualify for the UEFA Conference League quarter-finals. Playing every three days threatens to derail La Viola’s fragile resurgence and stretch their squad to the limit at a crucial juncture, something Vanoli will be desperate to avoid.

It’s been a hugely positive start to 2026 for Fiorentina, with just six Serie A teams accumulating more than La Viola’s 19 points this calendar year. They’ve been particularly hard to beat in Tuscany, where they’ve lost just one of their last seven league outings (W3, D3), courtesy of a 2-1 defeat to Cagliari in late January.

Still, Vanoli’s charges would be naive to tuck themselves into a false sense of security, having won just one of their last five home league matches (D3, L1). Adding to a long list of concerns, Fiorentina have lost six of their last seven Serie A meetings with Inter they’ve hosted (W1), not to mention a 3-0 battering in October’s reverse fixture at San Siro.

Inter

Inter’s strong pre-match favoritism is hardly surprising, given that they’ve emerged victorious from five of their last six encounters against Fiorentina at any venue (L1). Despite their dominant run in this match-up, the Nerazzurri would be well-advised not to take anything for granted as they stare down the barrel of a three-game winless league patch for the first time since 2023.

Chivu, who’s on the verge of winning the Scudetto in his first season in charge of the 20-time Italian champions, should be confident of maintaining a strong grip on the title despite recent setbacks. Indeed, Inter have remarkably won each of their 11 away league matches against teams starting this round outside the top five this term, suggesting this could be another day in the office for the visitors.

Delivering action from the get-go, Inter have netted an intimidating 28 first-half goals this season – only six fewer than Fiorentina’s overall league tally. On that basis, it comes as no surprise that they’ve broken the deadlock in a league-high 24 games so far.

Team News

In addition to long-term absentee Tariq Lamptey, Fiorentina will be without winter signing Manor Solomon and teenage left-back Niccolo Fortini. However, Vanoli received a major fitness boost on Thursday, as Italian center-forward Moise Kean shrugged off a persistent shin problem to start against Rakow. Therefore, he’s expected to lead the line tonight.

With Lautaro still in the pits and Marcus Thuram unable to find his footing since returning from injury, all eyes will be on prodigious striker Francesco Pio Esposito. Meanwhile, Chivu has welcomed talismanic midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu back from injury. The Turkish playmaker could register his first Serie A start since early January now that Henrikh Mkhitaryan is unavailable due to a hamstring problem.

Fiorentina vs Inter Potential Starting Lineups

Fiorentina (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Dodo, Pongracic, Ranieri, Gosens; Mandragora, Fagioli; Parisi, Brescianini, Gudmundsson; Kean.

Inter (3-5-2): Sommer; Bisseck, Akanji, Augusto; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Zielinski, Dimarco; Thuram, Esposito.

Fiorentina vs Inter Prediction

Though the threat of a first relegation since 2003/04 has become imminent, it’s hard to expect Fiorentina to upset the odds. With Milan heightening the pressure on Inter, last season’s runners-up should have enough quality and motivation to get back on track and secure all three points in Florence.
