Madelen Janogy netted a brace in a dramatic 4-3 victory for Fiorentina against AC Milan on match-day three of the Serie A season.

Elsewhere, reigning champions Juventus left it late to claim their first league win of the campaign against Lazio. They are now sixth in the league table with four points on the board, five adrift of leaders Roma.

Fiorentina triumph in seven-goal thriller

Fiorentina’s Emma Snerle won a 26th-minute penalty for Emma Severini to start the scoring in Saturday’s entertaining clash with AC Milan. To the visitors’ credit, they staged a turnaround to score twice in five first half minutes. Monica Renzotti tapped in the equaliser before Angelica Soffia slotted the ball in at the near post to give Milan a narrow lead at the break.

Janogy pulled Fiorentina level just before the hour mark. The Sweden international pulled away from her defender to head in from Snerle’s deep corner. As the game entered the final 15 minutes, Renzotti scored her second goal of the contest to put Milan in a strong position.

However, they were ultimately left with nothing to show for their efforts after they failed to deal with Fiorentina’s late fightback in stoppage time. Janogy produced a downward header from Severini’s cross to make it 3-3 in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Just minutes later, Katla Tryggvadóttir scored her first Fiorentina goal to snatch all three points. The summer signing slid the ball into the empty net after pouncing on a mistake from Milan goalkeeper Laura Giuliani. As a result, Fiorentina celebrated their first league win of the campaign, while Milan suffered back-to-back defeats.

Girelli snatches three points for Juve

After taking a point from their opening two league games, Juventus appeared to be on course to experience another frustrating outing on matchday three. However, Cristiani Girelli proved to be Juventus’ hero in their away clash with Lazio. The experienced forward held her nerve to convert an 86th-minute penalty after the referee spotted a handball in the box. Girelli’s first competitive goal of the season condemned Lazio to a 1-0 defeat, ending the home side’s unbeaten start to the Serie A campaign.

Roma continue perfect start

Like Lazio, Napoli also suffered their first league defeat of the season despite keeping Roma at bay in the first period of Sunday’s home clash. The visitors made an electric start to the second period, scoring twice in the space of three minutes. Giulia Dragoni guided a low shot into the bottom corner, before Alice Corelli lashed a fierce strike past Doris Bačić. Corelli went on to grab her second of the game in the 82nd minute, taking her tally to four goals in three Serie A appearances.

Roma would have been disappointed to lose their clean sheet in stoppage time, although there was little Rachele Baldi could do to prevent Davinia Vanmechelen from rifling a long-range shot into the top corner. Luca Rossettini’s side are now the only team in Serie A with a 100 percent record, putting them two points clear at the top of the table.

Genoa, Sassulo seal maiden victories

After losing their opening two league games, Genoa ended their wait for a league win in Saturday’s clash with fellow newly-promoted side Ternana. Alma Hilaj blasted Genoa into the lead following a goalmouth scramble, only for Giada Pellegrino to score a swift equaliser to leave the game finely poised at the break. As it proved, Genoa were the team that kicked on with two goals from corners after the hour mark. Emma Lipman steered the ball in from a near-post corner, before Valeria Monterubbiano headed in on the line to make sure of the three points. While Genoa got on the board, Ternana remain rooted to the bottom of the table without a point to their name.

Sassuolo required one goal to see off Como on Saturday. Lana Clelland and Benedetta Brignoli worked the space from a short corner for the former to stand up a cross for Naomi Eto to head home her first Sassuolo goal. Alessandro Spugna’s were unable to add to their tally, but crucially, they stood firm to seal their second league clean sheet of the season and their maiden Serie A win.

Inter held by Parma

Inter remain unbeaten in Serie A, but they would have been frustrated with Sunday’s goalless draw against Parma. The Nerazzurri created opportunities, but they were only able to muster one shot on target. Meanwhile, Parma would have been pleased to take their tally to four points with their first clean sheet of the Serie A season.

Best Serie A goal of match-day two

Vanmechelen’s goal may have been in a losing effort, but for us, it was still the standout strike of the weekend. The Napoli substitute produced a stunning first-time effort from distance, powering it out of the reach of the despairing Baldi in the Roma goal.

Serie A matchday two results in full

Sassuolo 1-0 Como

Genoa 3-1 Ternana

Fiorentina 4-3 AC Milan

Napoli 1-3 Roma

Lazio 0-1 Juventus

Inter 0-0 Parma
