Hellas Verona rose to a 2-1 victory at home to Venezia at the Stadio Bentegodi in Serie A on Friday evening, thanks to goals from Casper Tengstedt and a Jesse Joronen own goal, despite Gaetano Oristanio’s early opener.

Both teams had lost four of their opening six matches heading into Friday night’s game. Verona needed a win to sneak back into the top half of the table, while the visitors needed three to lift themselves out of the Serie A relegation zone.

It took just two minutes for the deadlock to be broken. Hans Nicolussi Caviglia’s corner escaped almost everybody, bouncing before it landed at the feet of Oristanio, who stabbed home to hand Venezia an early lead.

Tengstedt was involved all the way as Verona found the equaliser six minutes later. The Dane started the move out on the left-flank, and timed his run to perfection to receive it back off Daniel Mosquera, before volleying into the far corner.

Verona found themselves back in front three minutes before the end of regular time, from the same corner as Venezia’s opener 85 minutes earlier.

Darko Lazovic’s deep cross was met by Grigoris Kastanos, whose header was helped in by the flapping Joronen at the far post.

Verona now find themselves in 10th place in the Serie A table on nine points, while Venezia are stuck in the relegation zone for the duration of the international break, in 19th on four points from seven.
