Serie A Women’s Cup: Sassuolo stun Roma to seal semi-final spot, Milan keep up with Juventus

Sassuolo pulled off an impressive 1-0 victory over Roma in the second round of group games of the Serie A Women’s Cup, the tournament that takes place ahead of the regular Serie A season.

Inter, Lazio set up Group A decider

Inter racked up four goals in the first-half of their impressive 6-0 victory against Napoli. Haley Bugeja, Samantha van Diemen and Elisa Bartoli all found the net in the opening half hour. There was still time left in a thrilling first period for Brittany Raphino to add her name to the scoresheet. The summer addition forward cut inside from the right side of the box before blasting a left-foot shot into the far corner.

Matters got worse for Napoli when the referee spotted a foul in the box in the early stages of the second period. Bugeja kept her composure to seal her brace. Clarisse Le Bihan completed the rout with a tap-in in the 88th minute.

Eleonora Goldoni netted the opener in Lazio’s 2-0 win over Parma. Receiving a lofted pass on the left side of the box, Noemi Visentin hooked the ball over the goalkeeper and in off the far post. Emma Martín then doubled Lazio’s lead with a fierce long-range effort that soared into the top corner. Parma were unable to produce a response, and their disappointing outing was compounded by Caterina Ambrosi’s late red card for a reckless challenge as the last defender.

Lazio will enter match-day three in second spot and level on points with group leaders Inter. The team in first place after the final group game will advance to the semi-finals, leaving the other to see if they advance as the best second-placed side.

Sassuolo seal top spot in Group B

Sassuolo booked their place in the semi-finals with a narrow 1-0 win over Roma. Lana Clelland netted a decisive strike from distance in the 54th minute. The Scottish forward neatly worked the ball onto her left foot before sending a low, precise shot out of Olivie Lukášová’s reach.

The victory moved Sassuolo onto six points from two games, putting them three points clear of Roma and Fiorentina. Wins over those two sides mean they boast the crucial head-to-head advantage and have sealed top spot with a game to spare. As for Roma, they will have to beat Fiorentina on matchday three to have any hope of snatching the best second-placed position.

Elsewhere in Group B, Fiorentina bounced back from their 2-1 loss to Sassuolo with a 3-1 success against Ternana. Ilse van der Zanden and Emma Snerle both found the net in the first period. One of Ternana’s summer additions, Yang Lina, reduced the deficit within the opening two minutes of the second period. Ternana held out hope of salvaging a point until Emilie Woldvik headed home Fiorentina’s third goal in the 91st minute.

The result keeps Fiorentina mathematically in the hunt for the best second-placed spot. Ternana, meanwhile, are out after losing back-to-back matches.

Milan remain in touch with Juventus in Group C

AC Milan claimed a 2-1 home victory in Saturday’s home clash with Como 1907.

Thea Kyvåg struck midway through the first period to send her side into the break with a slender advantage. Tessa Wullaert, who joined Como from Inter this summer, restored parity from a 56th-minute penalty after Milicia Keijzer was penalised for a trip.

The Belgian’s first goal in a Como shirt was made to count for very little by Ewelina Kamczyk’s winner. The Poland international drove into the box and worked it onto her left foot before drilling low into the bottom corner.

The result confirms Como 1907’s elimination and leaves second-placed Milan on four points, two points behind leaders Juventus, who claimed a second straight win in their home meeting with Como. Léa Khelifi won the game with her first goal for the Italian giants. The midfielder rifled a fierce shot into the roof of the net to secure a 1-0 success ahead of the club’s final group game against Milan.
