Sestao River reached the Copa Federación semi-finals with a 4-1 win over Terrassa, securing a home Copa del Rey tie against top-flight opposition.
The match opened up after the break, the verdinegros scoring three times in 11 minutes to send Las Llanas into rapture.
According to El Correo, the progression brings a timely windfall for a club that posted losses of 43,000 euros last season. They have 48,000 euros already secured, 35,000 for the Copa del Rey first round and 13,000 for reaching the Copa Federación semi-finals, with gate income to rise when a Primera team visits. The opponents will be decided by a proximity-based draw on Monday at 13.00.
Head coach Héctor Urquía said reaching the Copa del Rey had been a major club objective, achieved through hard work at home, and praised his players’ generosity. He added they wanted to make supporters happy and that hosting a Primera side is a fitting reward.
Urquía first said he had no preference for the draw, then suggested Athletic might be best given the locality and many fans’ hopes. If that tie arrives, it would be a third Las Llanas visit in six years after 2020’s 0-4 and 2022’s 0-1.
The cup tie is scheduled for 28 October. Before then come four league matches, starting against Gernika on Sunday at 17.00. Sestao River are fourth with three wins and one defeat, Gernika are sixth and unbeaten with two victories and two draws.
