FC Bayern Munich is heading into a very interesting season. After a World Cup summer, there’s always uncertainty about how the team will settle into the season, because preseason training is anything but easy. But the record champions certainly don’t lack big goals. 

It’s no secret that FC Bayern always has big ambitions. In the new season, too, the club aims to once again be the benchmark domestically—and to play a major role internationally. They’re already working toward that in preseason, even though many stars won’t join the team until much later—or aren’t there at all yet.

The first competitive match—the Super Cup against BVB—is also just around the corner. Things will get underway at Signal Iduna Park on August 22, and by then, Bayern aims to be competitive at least once.

Hainer talks about big goals

On the sidelines of the Bayern women’s friendly against Paris FC (2–0), President Herbert Hainer spoke with the Abendzeitung München about the goals for the new season. Both teams—the men’s and the women’s—have their sights set on the greatest possible success.

“Of course, we also want to win the Champions League—as Vincent Kompany mentioned in Asia. But to do that, you need that little bit of luck in addition to athletic quality,” Hainer explained.

He continued: “In 2012, we were by far the better team in the final and still lost. In 2013, we won, but it could just as easily have gone the other way. But I am absolutely convinced that, from a sporting standpoint, we have what it takes to do it with both teams.”

Hainer was also extremely enthusiastic about the women’s new home stadium, the Sportpark in Unterhaching. That’s also where the friendly against Paris FC took place. “The VIP lounge is new, as are the locker rooms and the floodlights. You can really see, bit by bit, that things are changing. If you remember the stadium from back then, it’s almost unrecognizable,” Hainer gushed. A new turf will be installed soon as well, at which point the conditions will be perfect.
