Seven PAOK supporters were killed and three injured in a minibus crash in western Romania as they travelled to Lyon for Thursday’s Europa League match. According to ERT, a doctor treating a survivor said lane-keeping assist activated during an overtake, the steering locked and the driver could not regain control.

The group of 10 were heading to Lyon v PAOK on Thursday at 21:00, the final round of the league phase. The crash happened on the Drumul National 6, known as DN6, a single-carriageway highway where vehicles travel at high speed and which is among Romania’s deadliest roads.

The three injured were first taken to Lugoz hospital, then transferred to the county hospital in Timisoara. One was virtually unhurt, another had fractures that are not serious, and a third suffered multiple fractures including to the neck and spine, plus both collarbones, though his life is not at risk.

On Tuesday evening PAOK fans lit candles at Toumba Stadium in memory of those who died in Romania.

About 200 supporters travelled to Romania on Tuesday night and gathered outside Timisoara’s county hospital for updates, then all abandoned their trip to Lyon. Later, the away section reserved for visiting supporters will remain closed on Thursday and those yet to travel or already in France were asked to respect the PAOK family’s decision.
