Rui Costa still believes Benfica can win the league despite sitting seven points off top spot. According to Glorioso 1904, the president has communicated internally that the race remains open and that the club will not abandon the objective while there are points to play for.
Inside the Luz, he delivered a firm message to the squad, belief is total but the margin for error is none. He has demanded maximum focus, commitment and consistency, with no tolerance for complacency.
He also believes Porto and Sporting will drop points in the remaining rounds. The hierarchy is convinced the gap can be trimmed if Benfica do their job on the pitch.
Even so, the instruction is clear, Benfica cannot slip. Rui Costa, who is set to renew with three players, reiterated to the group and to José Mourinho that every match must be treated as a final.
Benfica visit Santa Clara on Friday 13 February in Liga Portugal Betclic’s 22nd round. Kick-off is at 18:30 at Estádio de São Miguel in the Azores, with Petit’s side the hosts.
