Several PAOK Thessaloniki supporters died in a road crash in Romania on Tuesday while travelling to Lyon for Thursday’s Europa League tie. According to L'Équipe, seven deaths have been reported by multiple sources.
The fans were in a minibus that left Alexandreia in Greece’s Imathia province. There were 10 people on board, seven died and three are, at this stage, in a critical condition.
The minibus moved out to overtake, then failed to return to its lane in time and collided head on with an oncoming tanker lorry. The vehicle carrying the supporters was destroyed.
PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis said in a club post that an unspeakable tragedy had struck, expressing deep sorrow, solidarity with bereaved families and support for those fighting for their lives.
Olympique Lyonnais announced that a tribute will be paid to the victims during OL v PAOK at Groupama Stadium on Thursday at 21:00. The club also offered condolences and sent thoughts to the injured.
