As Real Madrid get set to close out the year with a high-profile La Liga clash against Sevilla, the build-up to the game has already taken on an added edge.
With the match scheduled for later tonight at Santiago Bernabeu, Sevilla goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos has made it clear that his side is not travelling to Madrid just to make up the numbers.
Speaking in an interview with AS, Vlachodimos reflected on what it means to face Real Madrid away from home, especially in what will be the final match of the calendar year for Los Blancos.
When asked about the significance of the occasion, Vlachodimos highlighted the appeal of playing in such a stadium, even for the visiting side.
“Taking on Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu is something every player wants to do at some point. It’s a great thing to do, to see, to play, to enjoy.
“And that’s what we’re going to try to do in this match, following our coach’s plan to try to avoid mistakes, play a good game, and get something positive out of it.”
Beyond the match itself, much of the spotlight will naturally fall on Kylian Mbappe, who is just two goals away from surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 59 goals in a calendar year for Real Madrid.
Vlachodimos was asked whether that milestone adds extra motivation for him personally.
“My job is to prevent Sevilla from conceding goals, but it’s the same job in every game.
“It doesn’t change because it’s against Real Madrid or because Mbappe could break a record.”

The match also promises an intriguing duel between two top goalkeepers, with Thibaut Courtois expected to start for the hosts.
Vlachodimos spoke with clear respect about his opposite number, drawing on past encounters.
“I think he’s a very good goalkeeper. I’ve watched him sometimes, and he’s very good.
“When I was at Benfica, and we played in the Champions League, I followed him quite closely.
“He has demonstrated his great level many times in every tournament he has played in,” he noted.
Vlachodimos was also clear that, despite the odds, Sevilla believe they can make the contest competitive if they execute their plan properly.
“Of course, we all know about Real Madrid’s quality and how difficult it will be, but our mindset is to start well, play a good game, and then see what the scoreboard says at the end,” he added.
