Sevilla visit San Mamés at 17:00 on Saturday, carrying a record that has flipped the venue’s narrative. In this century they have taken 11 of their 21 all-time official wins in Bilbao.
San Mamés was once close to impassable for the Andalusians, who ended the 20th century with only 10 wins from 62 official trips. According to El Correo, the balance shifted with the new millennium.
The run started in 2001-02, when a solitary strike from Gallardo sealed a 0-1 victory. It heralded a stretch that consistently troubled Athletic.
Between 2004-05 and 2009-10, Sevilla won five of six visits in the league, including two 1-3 results featuring scorers such as Julio Baptista, Jesús Navas, Martí and Luis Fabiano. There was a 0-1 decided by Dani Alves, a 1-2 settled by a Kanouté brace, and the emphatic 0-4 in 2010. The lone respite for Athletic came with a 2-0 in 2007-08, courtesy of Yeste and Susaeta.
Their success continued beyond La Liga. In 2016 they won 1-2 in the Europa League quarter-final first leg after Kolodziejczak and Iborra overturned Aduriz’s opener, then in 2019 they claimed a 1-3 in the Copa del Rey last 16 through Nolito, Ben Yedder and André Silva. Back in the league, they triumphed in 2019-20, before edging consecutive meetings by a single goal in 21-22 and 22-23.
In total, nine league wins and two in the cups account for those 11 successes. Athletic will look to stop that pattern being extended at La Catedral.
