Sevilla have sacked Matias Almeyda after 32 matches, following Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Valencia, with the decision confirmed on Monday. Cadena Cope reports that Luis Garcia Plaza is among the leading candidates to take over.

Almeyda was appointed last summer by new sporting director Antonio Cordon. His side won 10, drew seven and lost 15 of those 32 games, scoring 43 and conceding 52. In La Liga they have shipped 49 goals, the worst record in the division, while their 37 scored ranks ninth.

Sevilla sit 15th, three points above RCD Mallorca in the relegation zone with nine matches remaining. The Valencia loss extended a run of one win in eight. Almeyda has been serving a seven-game touchline ban, with two matches left, so assistant Javi Martinez has been handling duties on the touchline.

It is not the first time this board have changed coach late in the season seeking a reaction.

Other names mentioned as possible options include Martinez, Manolo Jimenez and Joaquin Caparros as Sevilla aim to secure their La Liga status next year. Relegation would plunge the club into uncertainty, with a takeover bid led by Sergio Ramos currently in play.
