Luke Shaw has admitted that Manchester United’s defeat in the Europa League final is ‘so damaging’ for the club’s immediate future.
Brennan Johnson’s goal condemned United to defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night, as the North Londoners won an all-English European final in Bilbao.
Defeat concluded a torrid season for Manchester United, who are also set for their lowest league finish since 1974. Ruben Amorim admitted post-match that the club’s transfer plans will have to chance, ahead of just their second season without European competition in the Premier League era.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Shaw said the gravity of the situation is not lost on the players, who must question whether they are good enough for Manchester United.
“I think the worst it possibly can (hurt). It’s so damaging. Not just obviously tonight but we know how big it was for the future. The things that come with winning the Europa League, the Champions League for next season. It hurts a lot. To be honest, this season has not been good enough.
“I’ve just said it in there but I’ll say it again here, I think, us as players, have to question whether we’re good enough for Manchester United. Because this season is not acceptable, where we are in the league, the results we’ve had, it’s not acceptable for a club like Manchester United, that has won multiple trophies and always been one of the biggest teams in the world.
“At the moment, we’re so far away from that and us as players have to take responsibility for that because we’re the ones on the pitch that need to deliver. Not just tonight, it’s been a whole season that it’s been nowhere near good enough.
“It sounds a bit silly, but I can only say sorry to the fans, they deserve everything. To go through the season, ot stay with us, to always be supporting us through a really tough and bad season, they’re always there. I can only apologise for the season and thank you so much for the support, we really do appreciate it.”
