Sheffield United 0-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers: Visitors Deal Blades Late Blow At Bramall Lane | OneFootball

Sheffield United suffered a late 1-0 defeat at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon.

The game at Bramall Lane was quite even for the majority of the contest. But the visitors managed to steal all three points in the dying moments when substitute Raul Jimenez fired home from close range after a Tommy Doyle skewed shot fell to him kindly at the back post.

First Half

It was the visitors who started the brightest in the opening 20 minutes in South Yorkshire. Midfielder Munetsi found himself in a great position centrally inside the box, but he could only divert his first-time shot straight down the middle and into the hands of Cooper.

United had bursts of attacks in the first half, particularly down the left with Brereton Diaz, McCallum and Kitching all getting into promising positions, but the quality was lacking.

It was Wolves through Munetsi again who attempted to get onto a flick-on in the dying moments of the first half but it didn’t trouble the Blades.

Second Half

Coming out of the second half and the Blades ramped up the pressure and physicality of their pressing which saw some of their players cautioned.

Peck tested the Portuguese keeper, while at the other end Djiga had a glaring opportunity to take the lead, though he looped his header over the bar as a stranded Cooper looked on.

Cannon and Ayew came onto the pitch for the home side and both men gave United some life in attack. Firstly, Ayew broke into the box down the right and drilled a teasing shot-come-cross just inches wide of the far post. Then, Cannon picked up a pocket of space inside the box only to poke the ball into an empty six-yard box.

The game never felt like a 0-0, and it was the visitors that called upon their Premier League quality to pinch all three points late on. A wonderfully worked move saw Kieran Trippier lurk free down the right and fizzed in a first-time cut back, and the ball eventually found former Blades man Tommy Doyle who could only skew his shot into the path of Raul Jimenez. And the Mexican poacher buried the ball home from a few yards out in front of the travelling supporters.

Sheffield United will have to overcome this late misery and prepare for a midweek trip to Fleetwood Town in the EFL Cup.
