Sheffield United put ten man Birmingham City to the sword in a 3-0 win at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Tyler Bindon put the Blades in front early with a superb header after connecting with Gustavo Hamer’s corner. Hamer added a second in the first half when he latched onto a poor back pass and rounded the Birmingham stopper before finding the empty net from a tight angle. United made it three in controversial fashion in the second half when Oliver Arblaster’s effort was deflected in by Patrick Bamford who appeared to be offside.

First Half

The tone was set inside the opening two minutes when Neumann was booked for a cynical tug on Patrick Bamford, who appeared to be racing clear on goal. Sections of the home end felt a harsher punishment was warranted, but United quickly channelled that energy into an opener.

From Gustavo Hamer’s corner from the right, Tyler Bindon rose completely unchallenged to power a header home and give the Blades a deserved early lead. The pressure continued as Callum O’Hare, operating as United’s number ten, was denied by Allsop after Sam McCallum’s long throw caused chaos in the visitors’ penalty area.

The contest swung decisively on 18 minutes right in front of the dugouts. Former Blades loanee Tommy Doyle launched himself into an ill-advised challenge on Hamer, taking his man out and earning a red card.

United made the extra man count almost immediately. Anderson attempted to roll the ball back to Allsop, but Hamer anticipated the danger, nicked in ahead of the keeper and lashed the ball into the net to double the advantage from a tight angle.

Before the interval, the visitors briefly threatened a response when Stansfield slipped Gray in behind the home defence, but Japhet Tanganga recovered superbly to snuff out the danger.

Second Half

Any lingering doubt was removed early in the second half when Oliver Arblaster’s effort was deflected home from close range by Patrick Bamford, who looked offside, to make it three with plenty of time still to play.

United continued to hunt for more. Hamer was denied at the near post by Allsop with a strong hand to beat away his bottom corner strike, while Danny Ings was crowded out by Klarer after finding space in the box. Tom Cannon then fired wide after O’Hare had done brilliantly to keep a back-post cross alive.

The Blades are now seven points above the relegation zone and just nine points off the top six.
