Sheffield United may be concerned about the signing of Romelle Donovan from Brentford meaning the exit of Sydie Peck.

Sheffield United are on shaky ground once again this summer as off-field issues continue to swirl to distract from their potential rebuild ahead of the 2026/27 Championship campaign.

Having started last season with a points deduction, Sheffield United spent much of the campaign in a relegation battle after the appointment of former Reading and Hull City boss Ruben Selles went awry.

The 2025 play-off finalists got themselves back on track under the management of Chris Wilder but it remained a largely forgettable campaign with the focus this summer being on avoiding mistakes from last year to re-establish themselves as a promotion contender once again.

That remains the case and remains something that may well happen but The Blades find themselves in an uncertain situation with current owners COH Sports having been served a winding-up petition due to unpaid payments involving the takeover of the club from Saudi prince, Prince Abdullah, in December 2024.

As well as that, their summer window began with the sale of academy graduate Andre Brooks to Championship rivals Andre Brooks and now another product of their academy, Sydie Peck, will be the subject of further worry for United supporters.

Brentford may be offering Sheffield United a sweetener for Sydie Peck

It has been reported that Premier League outfit Brentford have been interested in Sydie Peck, along with West Ham United, just relegated down to the Championship.

There isn’t necessarily an acceptance that Peck will depart Bramall Lane but interest from a top-flight club and a side that have just netted £85 million for Mateus Fernandes will certainly mean it could be difficult for United to withstand that interest and pressure.

Brentford may also have now presented Sheffield United with something of a sweetener in their deal to try and sign Peck with news that youngster Romelle Donovan is set to sign for The Blades.

As reported by Mike McGrath, it is believed that the South Yorkshire club have agreed a deal to sign the winger on loan for the season from The Bees.

With that in mind, it could well be that Brentford are finding their way to working on an agreement with United for the signing of their 21-year-old midfielder.

Sydie Peck is a crucial player for Sheffield United

Having come through the academies at both Arsenal and then Sheffield United, Enfield-born Peck, who played on loan for Oldham Athletic during the 2022/23 campaign, has established himself as a key man at Bramall Lane.

Peck, an England U21 international, made his debut for United in their Premier League campaign in the 2023/24 season before making 42 appearances as they reached the play-off final in the 2024/25 campaign.

Peck then found himself as a first-choice player for Selles as well before kicking on further in the second half of last season under Wilder, emerging as more of an all-action midfielder from the more defensive kind that he came through as.

With five goals and four assists, as well as seven yellow cards, the stats show the rounded game of Peck and he would have been expected to continue to rise to be one of the best players in the Championship next season.

However, after United were forced into big money sales last summer with the departures of Anel Ahmedhodzic, Vinicius Souza and Kieffer Moore, as well as Brooks this summer amid that off-field uncertainty, the signing of Donovan may well be a positive one for United now – but may have hidden ramifications behind it with Brentford’s interest in their star midfielder.
