Jairo Riedewald's spell at Bramall Lane is set to continue into next season

Sheffield United's season has fizzled out in recent weeks, meaning that Chris Wilder's main focus is on building momentum ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The Blades' current Championship term has been one of inconsistency on the pitch, albeit the 58-year-old has been able to steer his boyhood club to safety in the division after a disastrous start under his successor and, eventually, predecessor, Ruben Selles.

After a run of six matches without a win, those at Bramall Lane were eventually given a taste of the winning feeling once again on Saturday afternoon as they completed a dramatic, late turnaround against promotion-chasing Hull City in a 2-1 victory.

As such, they are now 17th in the Championship table on 54 points with 12 more still to play for, and Wilder has insisted that the target for himself and his squad, which includes several players with experience of featuring in the second tier and beyond, is to accumulate as many points as they possibly can in their final four matches.

Aside from matters on the pitch, the current situation the Blades find themselves in has only increased speculation over the futures of key players - namely Gustavo Hamer, who continues to attract interest from clubs in the Premier League and in Europe given his ability.

However, it was confirmed by the club that former Everton midfielder, Tom Davies, will be one of those bidding farewell to the Steel City outfit when the campaign officially ends on June 30th, having rarely featured throughout the season as a result of fitness issues.

But, it has now also emerged that United are set to extend the stay of one of his midfield counterparts, in what is an added boost on top of the aforementioned victory over the Tigers.

According to the Sheffield Star, United are set to exercise a 12-month extension clause in the contract of Dutch midfielder, Jairo Riedewald, who has impressed whenever called upon since his arrival in the autumn. According to ESTIMATED figures from Capology, the versatile figure is currently earning a base salary of £25,000.

The 29-year-old was one of two free agent signings made by Wilder following his re-appointment in South Yorkshire in September, as he arrived before the Blades boss brought Patrick Bamford to the club ahead of the striker's own initial short-term contract being extended by a further 18 months.

Riedewald has made 23 appearances for United across all competitions since his debut against Watford on October 18th, starting in 18 of those in the Championship and scoring three times in the process.

He has also been involved in seven out of the last eight matches, and was involved in a key decision against Hull on Saturday, as he was adjudged to have been sent to the ground by Kyle Joseph as a penalty was awarded shortly after he entered the field, which Gus Hamer duly converted ahead of Danny Ings' winner.

United are, of course, currently well-stacked in terms of midfield options, although that could still change heading into a critical summer rebuild.

It has been widely reported that they are keen to keep Kalvin Phillips at the club once his current loan spell from Manchester City ends, whilst there are also question marks over whether they will be able to retain the services of Sydie Peck and Ollie Arblaster.

Regardless, keeping Riedewald at the club will be a huge boost given his experience and versatility, aspects which are a trend throughout Wilder's squad.
