Chris Wilder’s men will begin preparations for a second straight season in the Championship as their play-off hoodoo continued, with the Yorkshire club failing to ever win promotion through the play-off system.

It’s set to be a summer of change for the Blades, with several first-team players expected to move on as well as the future of the manager currently up in the air.

Assurances will need to be given quickly in order for Sheffield United to build towards a promotion push the following season, with the likes of Leeds United and West Brom showing in the past that it can be done the following term after play-off disappointment.

There’s no doubt the club will be putting together early plans for summer transfer activity, but one player who looked likely to join the club at the end of the campaign appears to have made a U-turn over a deal.

Sheffield United made an attempt in the winter window to secure the signing of Hertha Berlin defender Jonjoe Kenny, who wanted a move out of Germany following his exit from Premier League outfit Everton.

It was reported at the end of January that the Blades had reached a verbal agreement with Kenny for a move, and it was set to be an affordable deal given the defender’s contract expires this summer.

But in a recent development, Bild have reported that Hertha Berlin have rejected a six-figure offer from Sheffield United for the 28-year-old and are prepared to lose him on a free transfer instead.

From this, Kenny was hoping to return to the Premier League on a free transfer to Sheffield United, but the Blades’ failure to make it back to the big time means that the former Everton man has changed his plans.

Failing to realise his top-flight ambitions, the defender could now be tempted by a switch to Borussia Monchengladbach, who are reportedly interested in securing Kenny’s services.

Sheffield United will have to move on to other right-back targets

There’s no doubt that the signing of a right-back will be high on the priority list of Sheffield United this summer, with both Hamza Choudhury and Alfie Gilchrist expected to return to Leicester City and Chelsea respectively.

Jonjoe Kenny would have been a superb asset to have at Bramall Lane, with his pace and direct attacking prowess offering an alternative creative outlet, while he has gained vital experience in the Premier League and Bundesliga in the early stages of his career.

It is a real blow that Sheffield United are seemingly missing out on capturing his talent, but the Blades will still be an attractive project to other players as they search for a return to the Premier League at the second attempt.

Still possessing superior financial resources to the majority of teams in the division, there’s no reason why the club can’t tempt another attack-minded defender into the club who could be a real success when given the opportunity.
