Following a surprisingly poor start to the 2025-26 season, it's been a busy last week of the transfer window for Sheffield United. The Blades are rooted to the bottom of the Championship with four defeats out of four, and this has led to some frantic activity in the transfer market, with experienced players Japhet Tanganga, Ben Godfrey and Danny Ings all having arrived at Bramall Lane in the last week.

But the Blades may yet also have a fight on their hands to retain the services of one of their most highly-rated players. Gus Hamer has been on the watch-list of a number of clubs over the course of the summer, with persistent reports linking him to a possible return to the Netherlands. But it's now understood that the Premier League could be his most likely destination if he is to leave the club by tonight's 7pm deadline.

Leeds United could be greater threat than PSV to Sheffield United over Gus Hamer

The Sheffield Star reports that previous interest in Hamer from the Dutch giants PSV is likely to be eclipsed this deadline day by interest from a little closer to home, with reports that Leeds United could yet make a bid for Gustavo Hamer.

They report that a move to Eindhoven would largely be contingent on another transfer falling into place, and that this makes it more likely that any transfer deadline day drama could involve a move to Leeds United. Leeds are long-term admirers of Hamer, and made a £13 million bid for him shortly before the closure of last summer's transfer window.

FourFourTwo reported at the end of last week that Hamer could be available as a loan-to-buy, which has reignited the possibility that last season's Championship Player of the Year could yet leave Bramall Lane before the 7pm transfer deadline.

Gustavo Hamer is Brazilian-born, but grew up in the Netherlands and started his career at Feyenoord. But while it's been reported that he has private family reasons for potentially wanting to return there, any move would be dependent upon PSV accepting a Brentford offer for their midfielder Joey Veerman.

So far, they've received two and accepted neither, with the BBC reporting that the Dutch club have said that the player is not for sale. Time is starting to run out on the likelihood of all these parts falling into place, although it remains possible that they could agree something today.

A move to Leeds United certainly can't be taken off the table. Leeds' interest in Hamer is long-standing, while from the player's perspective, the prospect of moving back to the Premier League would have an obvious appeal and such a move wouldn't require him to uproot his family.

With less than a day to go before the summer transfer window closes, Sheffield United could yet face a challenge to hold onto one of their most-prized assets.

The Blades have already lost the likes of Anel Ahmedhodzic and Vini Souza in what has been a difficult summer for the Steel City outfit, and with the disastrous start to the season in mind coupled with the increasing tension and pressure among supporters, a sale for Hamer must be avoided at all costs.
