Sheffield United star Gus Hamer could be on his way back to the Premier League with Coventry City interested in the Dutchman

Sheffield United's squad has seen a mass exodus already this summer, as Chris Wilder rips up almost everything to build anew, and one more big exit could be on the cards.

Sheffield United's retained list saw ten players leave the club either at the end of their contracts or with their loans expiring, including the likes of Ben Mee, Danny Ings, Jairo Riedewald, and Tyler Bindon.

Since then, Andre Brooks has completed an £8 million move to Norwich City, whilst Alex Matos has headed to Turkish side Goztepe on loan, as the Blades squad is set to look completely different next campaign.

Whilst Brooks' exit to Norwich has proven to be widely condemned by huge portions of the Sheffield United supporters, and understandably so, one more departure may prove even more frustrating, though it may not have been wholly unexpected.

Gustavo Hamer made the move to Bramall Lane in the summer of 2023 for around £15 million from Coventry City following the Blades' promotion to the Premier League, with the Brazilian-born Dutch midfielder having been one of the Championship's outstanding performers in recent years.

Since then, Hamer has scored 22 and assisted 29 in 123 appearances across all competitions for Sheffield United in three years, with one of those being in the top flight.

Last season, the 29-year-old led the way with the most assists of anyone in the Championship on 13, whilst scoring five, despite only playing 37 league games.

Hamer's importance to the side, whether that be from the left or through the middle, cannot be understated, though now, according to Will Oelrich via X, his former side Coventry have held positive talks with the player's camp over a potential return to the CBS Arena this summer.

With 12 months remaining on his current deal in South Yorkshire, it was widely assumed by many that Hamer would likely leave this summer, so the Blades don't lose him for nothing.

The likes of Leeds United and West Ham United have been linked with moves for Hamer previously, but now, it appears as though Hamer could be making an emotional return to the team that initially brought him to the United Kingdom over six years ago.

Hamer would be a huge loss for the Blades, with his creativity and goal threat from the middle of the park something they won't easily be able to replace, but with an exit having probably been expected, Sheffield United supporters will hope a contingency plan was in place for this exact scenario.

With Hamer having been linked with a return to Coventry, Sheffield United supporters have taken to social media to give their reactions to the news, providing some varying opinions.

This Sheffield United supporter backs Hamer to do well back in the Premier League despite his age, and has quoted an £8 million fee would be enough for the two teams to come to an agreement on a deal.

Hamer was clearly Sheffield United's most influential player last season, certainly in an attacking sense, and finding someone that can shine as bright as his star for an ideal fee will be insanely difficult.

This Blades fan doesn't seem too gutted over his potential departure, and has accepted the fact that players come and go, and they can be replaced in some capacity, even Hamer.

Should Hamer take the step back up to the Premier League next season, the only thing potentially holding him back is his fitness levels; if he can address those, he could thrive back at his former side.
