Sheffield United are leading the race for Go Ahead Eagles right-winger Oliver Antman.
Sheffield United are leading the race for Go Ahead Eagles winger Oliver Antman.
Antman's first season in the Netherlands with Go Ahead Eagles has not gone unnoticed at Bramall Lane.
The Finnish international led the entire Dutch top-flight with an incredible 15 assists in 32 league games last term, whilst also picking up one assist in the cup.
To put this into perspective, Antman has never provided more than two assists in an entire season throughout his career before this campaign.
Only 23, Antman has been playing professionally since 2018, starting out at Helsinki-based club IF Gnistan.
His form helped Go Ahead Eagles secure European football for the first time last season, with the club winning their first ever KNVB Cup in April, securing qualification for the Europa League.
According to journalist Alan Nixon reporting via his Patreon on Sunday, Sheffield United are winning the race for Oliver Antman, and have reportedly raised funds to make a bid for the winger.
As exclusively revealed by FLW, Blades have been operating on a restricted budget so far this summer, looking mainly at free transfers and loan signings.
Antman has reportedly been offered to several second-tier sides, but United apparently think he's worth spending the money they have raised on.
Go Ahead Eagles Director Jan Willem van Dop has made it clear that the club will not let their star asset leave cheaply. The Dutch side are reportedly demanding more than €6m/£5.2m for Antman - a club-record fee for the Deventer-based club.
In an interview with RTV Oost, van Dop said, "We think Breum (Jakob) and Antman should be allowed to leave for more than six million."
The appointment of Ruben Selles as Sheffield United manager could prove vital in landing Antman's signature; the Spanish coach's tactics - on the surface of things - appear perfect for the Finnish forward's skillset.
Selles has revealed his idea of football is "always based in high-intensity moments", and that his sides should be "very dynamic and defend far away from the goal."
For Antman, who also scored six times in the Eredivisie last season, Selles' preference to attack will suit his direct style and ability to create chances in the final third.
Blade's data-driven approach under COH Sports ownership may have identified Antman as a standout value in the current market. It's obvious his stat output, combined with his age, is the sort of signing that would excite them.
The timing of any potential deal could be crucial with the Championship just a couple of weeks away, the right offer will surely have to be tabled soon if Go Ahead Eagles are to lose their star player.
