Sheffield United recently appointed Chris Wilder as manager for the third time
Chris Wilder was recently appointed as Sheffield United manager for the third time.
The 55-year-old was relieved of his managerial duties at Bramall Lane after he was unable to guide the Blades back to the Premier League last term, despite United becoming just the second Championship team to record 90 points but fail to achieve promotion.
They hammered Bristol City 6-0 in the play-off semi-finals, breaking the Championship record for the largest margin of play-off victory, but a shock defeat against Sunderland in the final resigned the Steel City side to another year of Championship football.
Ruben Selles was subsequently appointed to lead Sheffield United forward, but less than three months after arriving at Bramall Lane, the Spaniard was dismissed following a tragic start to the campaign.
The Blades have been defeated in their first five Football League outings for just the second time in the club’s history and after a 5-0 embarrassment at the hands of Ipswich Town, the higher-ups at United decided it was time for a change.
Wilder will look to use his extensive experience of managing Sheffield United to bring back the good feeling he previously instilled at Bramall Lane. There are signs that this is already happening, after footage of the Steel City side’s boss was released upon his return to the club.
The Blades have been a team devoid of energy and enthusiasm during the early stages of the 2025/26 campaign, which is a sharp contrast to the side that Wilder assembled last term.
Already though, it appears that he may have injected some positivity back into the Sheffield United dressing room after being appointed as manager once more.
The Steel City side released a video via their social media channels of Wilder greeting the players for the first time, and the reactions of Sydie Peck and Tyrese Campbell have spoken volumes to supporters.
“Look at Sydie’s face,” stated one fan. “Absolutely buzzing the lad.”
“Brilliant smile on Campbell’s face,” commented another. “Hopefully lots of goals will soon follow for him.”
One supporter noted that the players were visibly relieved to see Wilder after such a period of negativity, which included defeat in the play-offs and a dreadful start to the season.
“You can genuinely see how happy they are to see him,” acknowledged the fan. “People forget footballers are human, and the recent period must have been quite devastating. No promotion, losing the play-offs, friends leaving, losing their boss/mentor etc, new boss etc.. it’s an awful lot to take in.”
It’s clear to see from the footage Sheffield United released that the players are delighted that Wilder has returned after such a miserable start to the season.
Selles evidently couldn’t capture the hearts and minds of the Blades’ dressing room in the same fashion, which led to unenthusiastic and subpar performances on the pitch.
Sheffield United host Charlton Athletic this weekend for Wilder’s first match back in the home dugout at Bramall Lane, which will give the Steel City side a perfect opportunity to score their first points of the 2025/26 campaign.
This would be a huge boost for the Blades and prove that bringing Wilder back for a third stint in charge is ultimately the correct decision.
