Sheffield United could be in for a busy summer as the club looks to start again after a disastrous campaign in the Premier League.

The Blades were unable to impose themselves on the division last season, as their squad didn’t seem good enough to make a good go of staying in the league.

Relegation to the Championship didn’t really come as a surprise, and it is now Chris Wilder’s job to rebuild a side that can make a good go of getting promoted.

The club has already revealed that several players are leaving when their contracts expire; therefore, replacements will be needed.

One player the club should be looking to sign is winger Liam Millar, as it’s been reported he is on the radar of the Blades.

The 24-year-old has just finished a loan spell with Preston North End, where he has impressed, and it seems he could be on the way out of FC Basel this summer.

Sheffield United are said to not be the only side interested in the player, but given how well he did for North End in a system that is similar to what Sheffield United play, he could be the perfect addition for Wilder this summer.

But as well as that deal, Sheffield United should follow it up by signing Joe Worrall and Cameron Brannagan, and here is why...

Joe Worrall

Joe Worrall is a player with an uncertain future heading into this summer transfer window.

The defender has been at Nottingham Forest since an early age, going on to play over 200 games for the club in all competitions and even captaining the side.

Worrall was so important as Forest sealed promotion to the Premier League, but since then he has lost his place in the team and has fallen out of favour.

He spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Turkish side Besiktas, but it was a move that didn’t quite go to plan, as he appeared just nine times for the Istanbul outfit.

It has recently been reported that Sheffield United are interested in signing the 27-year-old, but they do face competition, as other teams in England are also said to be keen.

Despite there being a lot of interest, Sheffield United should look to pursue a move for the defender this summer, as he would be a top addition to a team in the Championship that is expected to be battling for promotion.

Worrall has over 160 appearances in the Championship and has experience of getting out of the league, and with him out of favour at Forest, Chris Wilder and co. should look to take this opportunity and add him to their team.

The 27-year-old would be a very good signing, as he brings leadership qualities, the ability to play with the ball at his feet, and he also knows how to get among the goals.

The defender seems like the ideal player to play in Wilder's system, as he’s no nonsense and would bring a bit of steel back into their club - and he's been there and done it when it comes to promotion.

Cameron Brannagan

Midfield is going to be a key area to address for Sheffield United over the next few months.

The Blades are letting Oliver Norwood leave, who has been a key part of that department for a few years now, while Gustavo Hamer could be another player who exits this summer, as it’s been reported he could leave if the club receive a £15 million bid.

Therefore, signing at least one new midfielder will be high on Wilder’s list, and one player the club should look to sign is Oxford United’s Cameron Brannagan.

The 28-year-old has been with the U's since January 2018, and during that time he has been a key part of what they do. Brannagan has chipped in with many goals and assists, as shown in the season just gone, as he grabbed 12 goals and nine assists in 43 league games as Oxford sealed promotion to the Championship.

Oxford, of course, will not want to see Brannagan leave now that they are in the second tier, but for the right offer, the club may have no choice but to expect it and allow him to leave.

Obviously, it has been in League One where the 28-year-old has been impressing, but given how well he has done, it seems he deserves a chance at playing for a better team than Oxford, with no disrespect intended.

Brannagan has proven to be a real threat with free kicks and penalties during his time with Oxford, something that Norwood has done for Sheffield United.

Furthermore, he is a player who can operate in a deep position but can also play further forward if needed. He could be seen as a similar player to Hamer, but he has offered more going forward than the Brazilian in recent seasons.

He may not be a cheap purchase, but he could be someone who improves their midfield and gives them a fresh option in terms of where he can operate in that midfield department.
