Sheffield United have been offered the chance to sign Stoke City midfielder Sam Clucas this summer but they are waiting to see if Slavisa Jokanovic wants him before making a move, according to Yorkshire Live.
Clucas is a player that is attracting a lot of attention in the transfer market this summer. Early reports emerged that the Potters could be prepared to allow him to leave for free before the start of July as they aim to reduce their wage bill.
The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that the likes of Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers are all potentially interested in securing the 30-year-old’s services this summer.
While a further report from Football Insider has suggested that West Brom could also enter the market for Clucas as they aim to build a side capable of challenging for promotion to the Premier League under Valerien Ismael next term.
According to this latest update from Yorkshire Live, Sheffield United have been made aware of Clucas’ situation at Stoke and their head of recruitment Paul Mitchell already knows him well having signed him for Chesterfield a few years ago.
It is believed though that the Blades have not yet offered Clucas any sort of deal with them. They are instead waiting to see if Jokanovic views him as a player that would be useful to his attempts of getting them promoted next term. If he gives the green light then Sheffield United could move for him.
The verdict
This seems like a sensible approach to take by Sheffield United and it is right of course that Jokanovic gets time to cast his eye over any potential players that the Blades might be wanting to bring into the club this summer. Clucas is a player that you could see fitting in really well with their current squad, but there is no point signing him if the manager is not too keen on him.
Clucas is a player with a lot of proven Championship quality and he also has experience in earning promotion to the Premier League as he did during his time at Hull City. It seems that someone is going to be able to secure his signature on a free transfer this summer and that would be a bargain acquisition for someone.
It would make a lot of sense for Sheffield United to make a move for him this summer, but if they are going to be able to sign him then Jokanovic must green-light the move as soon as possible because other sides are circling that might be ready to take advantage of the Blades stalling.
