It could be the end of the midfielder's Blades road following their play-off final defeat.

Gus Hamer is expected to leave Sheffield United this summer, with Leeds United and Everton reportedly interested in him.

In the 2025 Championship play-off final match programme, Hamer wrote that his dream was to win promotion. He'd failed once before with Coventry City, losing to Luton Town on penalties two years before, but he had a second opportunity to achieve post-season success. It unfortunately passed him by.

Despite his glorious efforts in the first-half, his control of the game began to slip in the latter period of the contest against Sunderland, and he was eventually subbed off due to a knock in the 72nd minute.

The 1-0 lead that he'd helped to build was overcome by the Black Cats, who scored just four minutes after Hamer went off to level the tie and then once more in the 95th minute to win promotion to the Premier League.

Hamer has played in the English top flight before; it wasn't that achievement that he was after. It was getting to stand on the royal balcony and lift the play-off winners' trophy above his head. Now that this moment has evaded him for a second time, he looks set to follow the path that he previously took after losing the play-off final and leave his current club for one in the league above.

Gus Hamer linked to Leeds and Everton amid expected Sheffield United exit

It is expected that Hamer will not play for the Blades next season, as per talkSPORT. The Championship's 2024/25 Player of the Season is likely to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Crysencio Summerville, and join a Premier League club following play-off heartbreak.

Second division winners Leeds and Premier League stalwarts Everton have put themselves in the race for Hamer, according to talkSPORT. It had been reported by TEAMtalk that the Toffees had Hamer on their watchlist heading into the summer.

The Blades' county rivals have held an interest in the 27-year-old for a while now. He was linked with a £13 million move to Elland Road last summer, although he has since dismissed that it was a realistic possibility.

Sheffield United have no option but to cash in on Gus Hamer

Being on the opposite end of the Hamer sale stick won't be a nice feeling for Chris Wilder, but it's a reality that they must quickly come to terms with. United benefitted from Coventry's missed opportunity in the play-offs. Now it is their turn to do the right thing and allow this wonderfully talented footballer to show what he's about at his proper level.

City sold the Dutchman to the Blades for £15 million in 2023, so they are unlikely to settle for anything less than that figure this summer.
