Sheffield United stole Huddersfield Town’s transfer gold - and laughed to the bank

Aaron Ramsdale, once linked with Huddersfield Town, ended up financially benefiting their Yorkshire rivals mere years later

Huddersfield Town's hopes of immediately bouncing back to the Premier League in 2019 saw them target a young shot-stopper at Bournemouth, who had become a cult hero on loan at AFC Wimbledon in the second half of the 2018/19 campaign.

The Terriers had conceded 76 goals and won just three games en route to a dismal second season in the top flight, finishing rock bottom. With that relegation, Danish goalkeeper Jonal Lossl decided to depart the club at the end of his contract.

Just weeks later, Yorkshire Live had linked Huddersfield to a loan move for Aaron Ramsdale, who had spent the previous few months at Plough Lane, helping the club make a great escape in League One. Under Wally Downes, the Dons would lose just one of their final 12 games to stay up on the final day on goal difference.

In between the sticks, Ramsdale would keep seven clean sheets in 20 third-tier outings, six of which came in that 12-game run. Evidently, the then-21-year-old was destined for bigger things.

Unfortunately for Huddersfield, those bigger things even surpassed their plans to get back into the Premier League, as Bournemouth deemed him a top-flight level shot-stopper, making him their number one for the 2019/20 campaign, and after one year there, he'd end up moving to a different Yorkshire side.

The one season Bournemouth integrated Ramsdale into their first team resulted in their five-year stay in the Premier League coming to an end, but not all of it was down to the emerging shot-stopper, who put in several respectable performances and kept clean sheets against the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester United.

Because of that, and with the potential that he had, his future likely lay in the Premier League still.

That summer, Sheffield United needed a new man in goal after Dean Henderson's two-year stint at Bramall Lane was set to come to an end, after Manchester United had plans to keep him at Old Trafford, so the Blades turned to Bournemouth and their former 'keeper.

Indeed, Ramsdale joined the Cherries from Sheffield United back in 2017, and three-and-a-half years later, the Blades spent £18.5 million to bring him back to the club.

Under Chris Wilder, Sheffield United had just come off the back of a more than successful first campaign back in the top flight since 2006/07, finishing ninth due in part to a solid defence, which conceded just 39 goals across the campaign. Unfortunately, that wouldn't ring true in Ramsdale's first, and only, season back at the club.

For the second straight year, the goalkeeper was part of a relegated side, as the Blades would finish bottom, losing 29 of their 38 league games that campaign. Ramsdale would keep five clean sheets once again en route to relegation, and was once again the subject of Premier League interest, with a third club in three seasons looking a real possibility.

Sheffield United managed to make a profit from Aaron Ramsdale, and pipped Huddersfield Town to Championship promotion months later

While there weren't many highlights from those specific seasons of Ramsdale's career, Huddersfield were going through a torrid time on the field themselves, finishing 18th in their first season back in the Championship, and 20th the year after.

Heading into the 2021/22 campaign, Ramsdale was on the move again, with Premier League giants Arsenal snapping the then-23-year-old up for £30 million, resulting in the Blades making a profit on the 'keeper, despite relegation.

That hefty fee, plus Premier League parachute payments, allowed the Blades to instantly mount a promotion charge in their first season back in the second tier. Joining them in that promotion race, rather surprisingly as well, was Huddersfield.

Under Paul Heckingbottom, Sheffield United would finish second, while the Terriers would finish third and have to settle for the play-offs, in which they would go on to lose in the final against Nottingham Forest. They would never recover from that and would eventually succumb to relegation to League One just two years later.

So, not only did Huddersfield miss out on a target that would end up financially benefiting their Yorkshire rivals several years later, but the benefits from that sale arguably helped the Blades oust the Terriers in their bids to return to the top flight.
