Leeds United have spent the previous weeks attempting to bring Sheffield United's Gustavo Hamer to Elland Road, a saga that is still unsuccessful.

However, in the latest twist, reports have emerged that the Whites submitted a swap deal bid for the midfielder, with Joel Piroe the player to head the other way if it was accepted.

Leeds have denied this claim, but it has raised questions over what Daniel Farke's side are willing to sacrifice to bring Hamer to the club before the transfer window slams shut at 11pm on Friday evening.

Sheffield United rejected a bid of £13 million for the 27-year-old earlier this week, according to The Star, after valuing him at £18 million.

Nevertheless, Leeds remain keen on sorting a deal for Hamer, with the player also interested in a switch across Yorkshire, as per claims made by GiveMeSport.

Joel Piroe not the right fit for Sheffield United amid Leeds United, Gus Hamer swap deal talk

With not much time left in the window, desperation has started to creep in across the leagues, and this attempt to bring Hamer to Elland Road is a good example of that.

Although the club has denied any such offer being made, it can be said that it would be an incredibly daring one, and perhaps one that could unsettle Piroe after joining Leeds just last year.

"Piroe doesn't fit the profile of the type of player that we're looking for," Jimmy told Football League World.

"We do need competition for Kieffer Moore, and I think a striker should still be on our wanted list, but not at the expense of Gus Hamer. He's not for sale.

"I don't think we should even consider selling him. I don't think we will sell him, and as for Piroe, I'm not entirely convinced that it's been a genuine offer."

Joel Piroe is an unnecessary subject in the Sheffield United, Leeds and Gus Hamer saga

Piroe has struggled to recreate the form he had previously shown while at Swansea City, and he scored just 14 goals in all competitions last season under Farke.

So far, in 2024/25, the 25-year-old has started only once, and is currently behind Mateo Joseph in the current pecking order at Elland Road.

His struggle for consistent form has seen him lose his place in the starting 11 this season, but being dragged into the Hamer saga will not help him, and is yet another unnecessary distraction surrounding Leeds at a crucial point in the summer.

It is potentially time for the Whites to realise that their desire for Hamer will not result in a move unless they pay the fee that is wanted by Sheffield United, with the low-balling efforts only wasting their time.

If Leeds do capture their man, then perhaps these early efforts have been worth it, but bringing a third party into it could end badly.
