Sheffield United Women have brought in promising Arsenal and England youngster Sophie Harwood on a season-long loan deal. The 18-year-old has recently signed her first professional contract with the Gunners and attended an Under-20s camp with England in Portugal earlier this month.

She can play in midfield or as a full-back and has been a regular member of Arsenal’s Under-21s since arriving from Southampton two years ago, as well as regularly being involved in the first-team setup.

Sophie Harwood’s Breakthrough Year At Arsenal

Harwood’s rise has been building for a while. She joined Arsenal’s academy from Southampton in July 2024, turned 18 in December, and made her senior debut off the bench in pre-season friendlies against Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United at Meadow Park last summer. She went on to make two Women’s Super League appearances for Arsenal in 2025/26, both as a substitute, totalling nine minutes on the pitch.

That limited game time is exactly why a loan move makes sense at this stage. Arsenal’s technical director, Jodie Taylor, said back in January that Harwood had impressed since joining the club and settled into the first-team environment extremely well, while director of women’s football Clare Wheatley praised her playmaking ability and versatility at full-back, adding the club believes she has high potential in the professional game.

At international level, Harwood helped England’s Under-17s reach the semi-finals of the European Championships at just 15 years old, and has since captained the side at both Under-16 and Under-17 level.

Sophie Harwood On Joining Sheffield United Women

“I’m absolutely buzzing. When I heard about this move, I was just so excited, and to finally be here feels great,” she said.

“I’ve honestly loved it. Ever since I first came in the girls have been so welcoming, the staff as well, it’s been a bit busy moving everything from London to here but I’ve enjoyed it so much.”

Sheffield United Boss Stephen Healy On Signing Sophie Harwood

“We’ve been looking at Sophie this summer since she signed her first professional contract, which is a huge achievement at a club with as many talented players as Arsenal have.

“She brings not only real quality but also versatility in terms of positions she can cover, and that’s been magnified by her involvement with England’s Under-20s earlier this month.

“We’re delighted both Sophie and Arsenal have chosen us to aid her development this season, and vice versa for us to get the best out of a really talented young player.”
