The Blades were unable to sustain a promotion push again this year, ultimately finishing 13th in the table, just 12 months on from reaching the play-off final.

The Yorkshire outfit will now go into the summer hoping to strengthen the first team squad in order to bridge the gap to the top teams.

Chris Wilder will be hoping to bolster his squad after they missed out on the play-offs by 13 points.

However, the futures of key players will also be up in the air with the campaign now concluded, and it could be another window of major departures from Bramall Lane.

It is set to be a busy few months for Sheffield United, who are preparing for their third year back in the Championship.

Sheffield United’s Gustavo Hamer plan

It has been reported by The Star that Sheffield United are targeting the addition of someone that can provide width on the left flank next season with a view to moving Gustavo Hamer into a more central position.

The future of the playmaker is in question going into the summer, with his contract now entering its final 12 months.

However, the Blades are going into the transfer market with the plan of keeping the 28-year-old, and moving him back into his more favoured position.

Hamer has spent a lot of time on the left side over the last couple of campaigns, and Wilder is keen to bring him back into the 10 role, with the recruitment team tasked with targeting a new left-winger.

Lewis Dobbin is understood to be of interest, but it remains to be seen whether a deal could be struck with Aston Villa following his loan spell with Preston North End.

Jack Clarke is also believed to be on their shortlist of targets following Ipswich Town’s promotion to the Premier League.

Clarke helped the Tractor Boys achieve a top two finish in the Championship, but the Blades are considering a move for the winger.

Meanwhile, Dobbin was a key figure for the Lilywhites as they earned a 14th place finish in the table, with the 23-year-old contributing 10 goals and eight assists in the league.

Sheffield United finished 13th, but it remains unclear whether they will be able to hold onto Hamer as he enters the final 12 months of his current deal.

Sheffield United need to get the best out of Gus Hamer to fight for promotion

Hamer didn’t have his best season for Sheffield United, and yet he still registered five goals and 12 assists in the Championship.

Moving him back into a more central role would be a positive step for the Blades, as that is where he is best able to contribute to the team.

If they can sign Dobbin or Clarke then that would be an impressive piece of business that would bolster their attack for next season.

Pairing either of them with Hamer has a lot of potential to be quite dangerous, but the playmaker’s future could also be determined by a major offer coming in for him, so we may never get to see how lethal that combination could be.
