Sheffield Wednesday named a preferred bidder to buy the club on 24 December

Administrator Kris Wigfield has been criticised by a person in the Sheffield Wednesday boardroom as the club awaits ratification of the James Bord-led bid to buy the team.

According to The Times, Wigfield received blowback because he and his family sat at a table in the director’s lounge during their November home game against Preston North End, which ended 3-2 in favour of Paul Heckingbottom’s side.

Administrators Begbies Traynor were appointed in October to find a new owner for the Yorkshire outfit following months of financial mismanagement under Dejphon Chansiri.

A preferred bidder was named two months later in December, with the offer backed by Bord chosen ahead of the likes of Mike Ashley.

However, the ratification process is ongoing, with the EFL yet to offer their approval to prospective new owners of the Championship side.

Kris Wigfield criticised for usage of directors’ box

An unnamed source from the Sheffield Wednesday boardroom has criticised Wigfield’s use of the directors’ box at Hillsborough.

It has been claimed that it was a bad look for the club due to their dire financial situation.

“It seemed ridiculous considering the financial state of the club,” said the unnamed source.

However, Wigfield has responded to the criticism by suggesting that it was an available table that he and his two sons used.

He’s also claimed that the club took on no cost through their use for the 3-2 loss on 29 November.

Supporters are becoming increasingly concerned for the future of the Yorkshire outfit, with it now being over a month since the preferred bidders were named.

It remains to be seen whether Bord and co-bidder Felix Roemer will pass the EFL’s Owners and Directors Test, which could lead to a brand new search for a new owner if failed.

Sheffield Wednesday are 24th in the Championship table, and are all but guaranteed to be relegated to League One this season.

Sheffield Wednesday situation dragging on will lead to blame game

Wigfield has been transparent throughout the administration process, and has spoken well about the process of finding a new owner.

The EFL’s ratification process is now out of his hands, and there is little he can do to get it approved, with his focus instead on ensuring the club continues to have money day-to-day.

The usage of the directors’ box at a time like this is very unimportant when the entire future of this historic club is at stake.

But the longer that this process drags on, the likelier it is that people will start to play the blame game, and Wigfield is always going to end up at the centre of that.
