Callum Paterson has been told he needs to be playing regular football, amid reports that he's been told he can leave Sheffield Wednesday this month.

According to reports from The Star, Paterson has been given the green light to find a new club, with the 29-year-old unlikely to feature too often for Danny Rohl's side this season.

The versatile Scotsman moved to Hillsborough in 2020 and has served the Owls well, playing an important role in their promotion from League One in 2023, but looks set to struggle for playing time this season, and it could be in the best interests of both the player and the club if he moves on this summer.

Paterson started the Owls' recent 2-1 win over Hull City in the EFL Cup, but it remains to be seen how many more games he'll play for Wednesday, and he was completely left out of the squad to face Plymouth on the opening weekend of the Championship season.

Callum Paterson urged to depart Sheffield Wednesday to seek regular game-time

FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Callum Maxted, claims he will be sad to see Paterson inevitably depart after giving the club some memorable moments, but believes that the Scottish international needs to play regularly at this stage of his career.

Speaking to Football League World, Callum said: "I just don’t think that Paterson fits the mould of player that Rohl wants. He’s been a really good player for us, there’s no doubt about that really.

"He’s been loyal, committed, and he works his socks off every single game, and he’s a hard worker.

“He’s versatile, he’ll play anywhere he’s told to and scored some important goals. The play-off goal was an important one (against Peterborough), for example. “At the age he is, he needs to be playing games, and he’s probably not going to get that at us, so it’s important that he finds a club.

“It’s disappointing, but that’s just the place where we’re at to be honest.”

Paterson's best asset is his versatility, and during his time at Hillsborough he's played in nearly every position, with goalkeeper the only position you wouldn't back the 29-year-old to do a job at.

This versatility makes him a very attractive player for clubs on a budget, as it means he can be used in a range of different positions, and it could save clubs having to sign a number of players to play in different positions.

Paterson had previously attracted interest from his former club Hearts, and it would be a surprise if there weren't a number of clubs enquiring about his availability in the coming weeks prior to the transfer window closing.

The 29-year-old is the model professional and can be trusted to put a shift in wherever he plays. It's just unfortunate that Sheffield Wednesday's summer business has meant that he's slipped down the pecking order at Hillsborough.
