Plymouth and Barnsley should be in for Sheffield Wednesday-linked Davis Keillor-Dunn this summer

Davis Keillor-Dunn is currently in the USA with Wrexham as part of their pre-season preparations, but the expectations are that chances in the side will be pretty slim when the Championship campaign kicks off.

The 28-year-old moved to the Stok Cae Ras in the January transfer window last season from Barnsley, where he'd netted 13 times in 24 League One games in the first half of the campaign, following an 18-goal term the year before.

However, he played just 88 minutes of football in the second half of the campaign for his new club, starting none of his seven appearances in all competitions and was left on the bench in 10 of his 16 league outings following his arrival.

The forward line at Wrexham is stacked with quality, and with more likely to come in to add to the likes of Josh Windass, Kieffer Moore and Sam Smith this summer, Keillor-Dunn's already sporadic role in Phil Parkinson's side may be decreased even further.

Sheffield Wednesday have been incredibly ambitious in their first summer transfer window under the Arise ownership, as they look to not only rebuild a squad ahead of their League One return, but also create one that could challenge near the top immediately.

Towards the end of June, the Owls were linked with a move for Keillor-Dunn, which formed the initial indications that the 28-year-old would be surplus to requirements at Wrexham this summer.

But, as time has passed, those reports have died down significantly. The Owls have still needed a starting striker this summer, but a move for Mason Burstow looks more likely now.

Burstow, like Keillor-Dunn, can play all across the frontline and behind the striker, too, so perhaps the 22-year-old's imminent arrival could definitively spell the end of their pursuit of the former Barnsley man.

Regardless of whether the Owls are interested anymore or not, these two League One rivals should be trying to get in ahead of them to secure the 28-year-old's signature this summer.

While a return to Barnsley for Keillor-Dunn six months after first leaving could be a move born out of sentiment, the Tykes need some recognisable goal-getters to help bolster Daniel Stendel's attacking options this summer.

Makenzie Kirk looks to be a promising frontman on loan from Portsmouth, but struggled to get into a Pompey side that was bad in front of goal last year, playing fewer than 500 Championship minutes.

Additionally, while Amani Richards has a good scoring record at youth level, his only past exposure to EFL football came by way of a six-game stint at Exeter City during the 2024/25 campaign.

There are a lot of question marks about where the goals will come from at Oakwell this year, and bringing Keillor-Dunn back could answer those immediately.

The 28-year-old has shown at Oakwell that he is comfortable leading the line by himself or as part of a two-man strike partnership, and Daniel Stendel flipped between the two throughout his successful 2018/19 campaign in the dugout, so a return would be perfect for both the club and Keillor-Dunn himself.

Plymouth Argyle have a Lorent Tolaj-shaped hole in their attack now, after the Swiss frontman was bought for a fee in excess of £4 million by Championship outfit Bristol City.

The 24-year-old scored 21 times in all competitions last season for the Pilgrims, 17 of which came in just 29 League One outings at Home Park.

All eyes are on who will come in to replace Tolaj and take on the goalscoring burden as Tom Cleverley's side look to better last season's play-off near miss. Bim Pepple, who scored 16 last season and partnered well with the Swissman, could provide that, but he'll need someone next to him.

Keillor-Dunn could prove to be that new striking option next to the Canadian, and it would ensure that Plymouth have two strikers capable of pushing 20 goals next season in League One once more.

Argyle have to secure their Tolaj replacement quickly, ideally before their season kicks off with a Devon derby against Exeter on August 10, and the out-of-favour Wrexham man could be exactly what Tom Cleverley needs.
