The Owls’ issues have been well-known, with the club having entered administration last month, which finally put an end to Dejphon Chansiri’s time at the club.

There was more positive news for Wednesday last week, when the EFL lifted restrictions that prevented the club from signing free agents, which meant the Championship side could finalise a move for Cooper.

Liam Cooper had rejected other clubs to join Sheffield Wednesday

The former Leeds man will add experience and know-how to the Wednesday backline, so boss Henrik Pedersen will be delighted to have added the 34-year-old to the group.

There had been frustration that Cooper couldn’t link up with Wednesday earlier than he has, but now they hope it will be worth the wait.

And, in a fresh development, Cooper’s commitment to Wednesday has become clear, as journalist Alex Miller has revealed that the Scottish international rejected the advances of other clubs in order to sign for the Yorkshire outfit.

Liam Cooper done, then. Interest had been there as far back as the summer and was just about all but done.. only for those working at the club to discover the restrictions the club was under. Told Cooper, picky on where he wants to play at this stage of career, rejected other offers to wait on Wednesday.”

Cooper has been without a club since he left CSKA Sofia earlier this year, with his last appearance for the Bulgarian side coming back in July.

Liam Cooper is a shrewd addition for Sheffield Wednesday

This is good for Wednesday fans to hear, as, despite their struggles on the pitch, it’s clear that Pedersen has a committed, passionate squad that is fighting for the badge - which is what the fans want to see.

This update suggests Cooper has firmly bought into that, and no matter what happens, he is going to enjoy playing at Hillsborough and being part of the club.

From Wednesday’s perspective, bringing Cooper to the club was a no-brainer, and his influence won’t be restricted to just what he produces on the pitch, as his leadership and knowledge will be very useful in the dressing room, particularly to the younger lads in the group.

Ultimately, that makes this a good fit, and it’s now down to Cooper to try and force his way into the XI, and it will be intriguing to see if he is given a first start in the Steel City derby on Sunday, which would be a baptism of fire for the centre-back.
