Sheffield Wednesday are interested in adding Elliot Lee, who is set to leave Wrexham

Sheffield Wednesday are eyeing up midfielder Elliot Lee, who is set to leave Wrexham via a mutual termination of his contract.

The Owls have been on the busier side of their fellow EFL counterparts when it comes to transfer business this summer, with Jaden Heskey's loan arrival on deadline day being the 17th new addition to Henrik Pedersen's side.

Wednesday needed a full squad reset, though, given their senior side was gutted in the final months of the Dejphon Chansiri reign, with inexperienced academy prospects and ageing veterans making up the bulk of the teams who lined out in the Championship last year.

It was reported that the Heskey return would be the final transfer of the hectic summer window at Hillsborough, but a contract decision at Wrexham could have them in for one final deal.

Wrexham midfielder Lee is, like Conor Coady on Monday, set to have his contract with the Red Dragons mutually ended and, according to Rich Fay, Sheffield Wednesday are amongst the sides interested in bringing him in.

The 31-year-old has been with the Red Dragons all the way through their journey from the National League to the Championship, arriving in 2022 and being one of the lynchpins of their three consecutive promotions.

However, in the second tier, as has been the case with a number of his teammates, Lee has struggled to make any impact. All his appearances for Wrexham last season came in the EFL Cup, and he was loaned out to Doncaster Rovers in January.

With Phil Parkinson's side looking to strengthen and improve yet again, an already surplus-to-requirements Lee has become even more expendable. After no meaningful offer has come in this summer, the 31-year-old seems set to leave for free.

The Owls went into the final stages of the transfer window needing midfield cover, following the season-ending ACL injury to Tyler Onyango. The loan arrival of Heskey seemed to add that sufficiently, but a more experienced attacking option could be explored, too.

Callum Slattery has enjoyed a fine start to life in South Yorkshire, netting twice and adding an assist in his first three League One outings, but behind him, Wednesday have a lot of younger number 10s who, arguably, see themselves as strikers.

The likes of Harry Gray and Mason Burstow will likely do a job there, but the hope of them both would be that they'd be the main options in the striker department.

A move for a more natural and experienced creative midfielder could alleviate the need for those two to be options behind the striker, instead leaving them to focus on battling for the starting spot at the top end of the pitch.

Sheffield Wednesday's business this summer has been under the ruling of an agreed financial framework with the EFL, following their exit from administration, something which will restrict the Owls until the end of next season.

Perhaps the reason Wednesday's summer additions were seen to be completed with the arrival of Heskey was due to the inability to pay a transfer fee so as not to go over a certain budget set out for the window.

With Lee being available shortly on a free transfer, the Owls will only need to pay his wages, which could be a possibility if Henrik Pedersen decides that his squad really needs a specialist number 10 to provide cover throughout the season.
